My most used tool.

It is small but that is what makes it so useful. I am hobbiest cabinet maker that exclusively uses hand tools. When jointing an edge this is the tool I use to check square. When cutting dovetails this is to hand. When transferring measurements this is what is use. Checking depths of a dado or housing again this is my tool of choice. As far as I know Starrett are the only tool of this spec available in the UK.

Tried and true

As you would expect from Starrett, this is a nicely made, nicely finished square with high accuracy. It is one of those tools that is a pleasure to own and use. Far far better than many cheaper squares it is well worth the extra cost and with a little tlc will likely last a lifetime. Lovely.

It's a Starrett, what else can you say?

Superior quality and accuracy. Worth the money. Heavier than it looks being so small...but that is a good thing.

Dramatic Quality Difference vs Cheaper Squares

Like a lot of buyers/reviewers, I hoped I haden't goofed up by spending so much on a tiny square. BUT - The moment I opened the box and start moving the thing through it's adjustments I lost the anxiety. Silky smooth screw adjustment. Open the adjuster a quarter turn and PUSH and the blade will slide to where you want it.I've checked it's squareness and it's inch/fraction markings with every 1-2-3 block and test standard I've got. It's square. It's accurate to farther than I can measure. It doesn't lose it's square setting when you're working.I'm not a Starrett fan boy. I own a few of their tools. One of them, a 24 inch ruler, is total crap. I went into this purchase with no prejudice. Not expecting amazement or failure. I got amazement. I've PEC'd and I've Gaged. This thing is simply better than either of those other squares. Hard to imagine how a simple square COULD be better/worse. But this one demonstrates the possibility very nicely. Thanks - Lumpy

Precision tool

Excellent, precise, well machined albeit expensive tool. All as advertised. Received on time in excellent condition. Nothing like an instrument one can count on...and even feels good just to handle. Do I need such precision? Probably not, but this is an extremely handy little thing that fits easily in my apron...unlike a lesser quality square I've been using that sticks and binds when I attempt to lock it at a measurement. And made in the USA.

Benchmark quality, you can't go wrong

I have several Starrett products: squares, rulers and straight edges. I've never been dissatisfied, though the price always causes me to choke a little bit. But then I think of how much it would cost if I bought the next cheaper model (PEC), fought with it for a whole year, until it failed completely, ruining at least one workpiece along the way. From this perspective, the Starrett is downright cheap. And then I consider that once I do buy this one, I'll have it for life. I'll reach for it countless times every day, and never once have to wonder if it's really accurate enough for the task. And eventually, when I'm finished with it, my son will take it up, and use it for his lifetime, and perhaps my granddaughter's lifetime, too.Yep. This is why I have Starrett tools. And why I feel so stupid for buying that PEC 4" double square last year.

Woodworking

As good as a gets for quality and being square. I reach for this 4 inch square more than anything else in my woodshop, more than my starret 12 inch combination square.
