How do you open the plates wider?

Dear Judith,
If you mean opening the paltes, please turn the Gloden Button left to Unlock the plates, the opening range of the paltes is around 2 inch measured from the top. 
After usage, you can turn the Gloden Button right to Lock the plates for easier and safer storage & travelling.

Is there a gap in the middle of the plates?

Dear Customer, for the plates of ibroo S3, in one side, there is a nearly 1/16" width X 2" length aperture or gap as you said, where the infrared shine comes through, in the other side, it is a sink reflection strip. So different from others 2 PTC structure, the S3 has 4 PTC parts which giving more evenly heating and clamping. The video is FYI. Thanks.

Is this real hair straightener and curler 2 in 1? Can I use this for curling ?

I see most complains are about the button place, but also lot's of reviews are very positive, is it really everytime annoying? Anyone who can share mo

Upon my experience of using this one, I can accept this button position. I ever used three type of flat irons, one is button inside, the second is on the side, and this one is on the outside. All have pro and con. The button inside, the pro is you will never have the chance to mistouch it and change the setting, but the con is you have the risk to get your finger burned cause it's mostly close to the heating plates, and it is inconvenient when you need to change the setting during your styling, for instance, when you need to lower the temp in the hair end, it is awkward. The cons of button on side or on the outside shell is you do have the risk mischanging the setting if you grad it right in the way, but the pro is you won't have the risk of hands burned.
I never mistouch the button during straightening, but happend once during  my curlings when I was not aware of the mistouch risk. Now I usually grab the position of led lights place, up the on/off button, cause I can feel the housing material is high quality, it is anti-heating, I feel the hottest part outside  is around 160F when I set inside  iron as 392F. It never happend mistouching again. So, it is not annoying me.
