Batwoman

Overall, Excellent
I read Batwoman so far slightly out of order (the first three volumes of New 52 before the Elegy storyline; oops), so this collection fills in some blanks for me. I was aware of some of the major plot points here, but not all of them and not the story details.Overall, the writing here was good. I like Kate as a character, her backstory is well fleshed out, her flaws are matter of fact (they're there, but they're understandable, not insurmountable, and not blamed on extraneous factors), and her introduction as Batwoman was very well done. My only real complaint about the writing is that there's some stuff going on that I had no idea about. The Religion of Crime and its warring sects? And this involves a werewolf and other 'monsters' somehow, even though batbooks usually don't deal with magic or supernatural storylines? I realize that there's probably explanation for this somewhere in the previous fifty-ish issues of Detective Comics, but that doesn't help me while reading this collection. In some other trade paperbacks that excerpt individual story arcs from larger works, there is a paragraph or so overview given to orient to the reader and explain parts of the story that might otherwise cause someone to scratch their head and wonder what the hell is going on. The actual New 52 Batwoman series has this, giving an overview of Kate's kidnapping and why she is Batwoman, so why not include something similar here?Regarding the art, I go back and forth. There are some scenes that saved as a screenshot because I thought they were gorgeous, but most of the art was just sort of 'meh.' But that is my personal preference, though, and I have a similar view of the artwork for all of the Batwoman books I've read so far.I do intend to continue reading Batwoman, mostly because I have heard really great things about the character and I've seen her in other media - specifically, the DCAU - and liked her. I also plan on at least giving the live action TV series a try despite the fact that live action isn't really my thing, and I plan to continue reading the comics. This collection, especially with the Cutter story, is a good jumping off point and I'm happy to have read it. The few gripes I have with the book aren't enough for me to dock it any stars.

Amazing
First time reading any Batwoman graphic novels. The artwork is really amazing and cryptic. It makes it fun to decode it and make your way around all the details of the story in the images. I have a daughter that I look forward to sharing this with one day. Súper female empowering!!It’s great! But it’s not your typical clean cut gal Friday turned superhero. This is an ex-army trained slash punk rock bad ass who lives against the grain in both her day life and superhero life. It takes owning your identity to the next level.

Consequences of War & How it Influences People
This story tells about the life of a soldier named Kate Kane which surrounds her childhood and young adulthood that ultimately leads Kate to confront a unique faction-leader named Alice who has altered the religious-faction’s tenets from just a religious text to also incorporate the ideas of the author Lewis Carroll which have been twisted to support violence. To face such manipulative and deadly actors, Kate dresses in attire similar to the detective known as Batman but Kate is called Batwoman and she gathers intelligence and then forms relative missions and operations based off her intel. Kate acquires intelligence about Alice and determines Alice’s background requires a meticulous response to prevent further bloodshed.Four stars are earned for the story’s clear differences between the characters Batwoman and Batman, the story’s pacing, the art, and ideas about relationships readers are given to muse upon. The first star is earned due to an interesting story caused by the distinct difference Batwoman is from Batman. Batwoman is a soldier who experiences past and present events that soldiers and victims of war face, Batman is simply a detective who witnessed his parents killed which causes him to aggressively protect people. Kate Kane has been a war-actor since she was a small child, receives military training, and thinks as well as acts like a soldier which is very different than Batman and that creates interesting storylines. The pacing is fast, but with a decent amount of text to tell the story and bestow character development which is complex due to it being influenced by works written by Lewis Caroll. Since there’s no slowness and events happen quick but they aren’t mindless violence, readers aren’t bored by sluggish transpiring of events nor are they bombarded by long fights and that earns a second star for the story. The art is clear and unique. Colors are lightened but not dull, sometimes they are black and white, which are purposely needed to support the tone of the story and its events which produce relative emotional responses. Art’s lines are thin, they clearly create detail and simple textures for objects, profiles, and environments that have nice depth. Interestingly, there are unique borders sometimes during the story and pictures will often be at long thin-angles or sometimes in a circular direction which earns a third star for the story. The fourth star is earned for ideas readers are given to contemplate regarding relationships. Specifically relationships that entail: people who are discriminated against, people who are compared to men, and people who experience war which significantly influences their roles and actions later in life. Ideas about war, soldiering, militant operations as well as violent responses, and the consequences as well as effects of war on people are primary in this story which is very interesting to read. Due to war and its relative actions being central to Batwoman comics, customers should be aware that graphic violence is constantly depicted in Batwoman comic books and should look through them to make a personal judgment about giving Batwoman comics to children or any age who may be wary of violent stories, or to determine as a customer whether to purchase Batwoman for one’s own collection.Nice thing about the internet, it lets readers easily see into a comic or a novel via book trailers online with music themes performed by musicians that promote the book or comic which is a great help for readers to decide if they want to read or purchase a novel or comic book. Just like movie trailers, book trailers can very clear narration about the story, quote the story, or be incredibly abstract: all methods are used to entice one to read the promoted story. Notably, some book trailers can also be long which is nice as a prospective reader / customer so one is given a decent amount of time to view a novel or comic book; long trailers often depict a long series comprised of many novels or comics. To view a Batwoman book trailer that showcases a lot of comics from her series, one can use a search engine and type the keywords: Batwoman Alice theme.

The definitive batwoman read!
Hands down the best batwoman comic! Such and underrated character! It’s a real shame that Greg rucka didn’t write anymore batwoman as what’s here is excellent I highly recommend this book to anyone who’s interested in the character or just wants to see if the comics are better then the underwhelming CW show. (Which it is)

THE BEGINNING!
This is where the new Batwoman begins! Great story lines and dynamic artwork tell the beginning of the newest Bat family character and she is far from the usual Bat hero! You need a copy of this book if you really want to know the back ground of this great Bat hero, and why The Batman is critical of her. I wish DC could have kept her stories at this level, because it hasn't gotten any better than this intro. A must read!

Amazing origin story comic
Expands upon Kate’s story, as well as introducing new ones throughout that journey. And setting the pieces together for the next volume. The queer representation and her experience being queer in the army was also super well done. And amazing art.

Amazing in very detail.
The art. The stories. The characters. All of it: Amazing. Certainly a new favorite comic to follow. The author and artists clearly have a beautiful vision.
