I gave this book to a little girl who was soon to be 2 years old. I knew she was not yet certain about what a birthday was, and I thought the book might help her understand the occasion. Well, it was a HUGE hit, even weeks later the book that Lily chooses often for her mother to read her.And as her mother reads it, she pauses as each ingredient of the birthday cake is mentioned (eggs, butter, sugar, etc.) and asks, "Where are the eggs/where is the butter, Lily?" and Lily jumps up and races to the kitchen, pointing at the refrigerator. Obviously, I highly recommend this book!

My daughter was enchanted by this book. A perfect read for a toddler. A charming book with a spare text and lovely illustrations. I love this new large board book edition with its rounded corners. A beautiful updated edition of a classic Oxenbury book. I hope Candlewick keeps bringing back more of their wonderful early classics! I sold this one as a bookseller in the 90's and was delighted to find it in print for my daughter!

Sono una grandissima fan di Helen Oxenbury e questo libro lo trovo bellissimo. Il protagonista (che può essere un bambino o una bambina) chiede agli animali gli ingredienti per fare la torta di compleanno. C'è la solita ripetizione di parole che stimola la memorizzazione nei bambini e alla fine c'è la ricetta per fare la torta. Merita! A noi piace molto!

Ce livre est une litanie, à chaque page l'enfant va à la rencontre d'un animal qui lui apporte son aide pour collecter l'un des ingrédients nécessaires à la confection de son gâteau d'anniversaire, à la fin, ils font et mangent le gâteau tous ensemble.Ma fille a reçu ce livre à deux ans, l'histoire lui a toujours beaucoup parlé, elle connait tout le vocabulaire du livre, je n'ai plus besoin de lui traduire le texte.
