Better than his ink sketch book...
It's not a thorough how to book; it's quick and fast tip bits; some of his sample paintings would take a novice 20 minutes and a professional 5 minutes to complete. I'll keep it for a short while then it'll be donated to the library. What few 101 instructional samples there are, they are clear, simple, and concise and over in 3 to 4 illustrated frames. No special techniques or tips or tricks of the trade exposed here. There isn't enough to seriously teach watercolor painting. Still, I like this book much more than his "Freehand Sketch" book; with this book you get some sense of the enjoyment from the author--like he felt or put some effort in putting this book together while the "Freehand Sketch" had a "can't-wait-to-finish-this" hurried through value. Though I enjoy this book, one can learn more from watching watercolor painting on youtube. I am not disappointed, but not jumping up and down with inspirational appreciative awe. You don't learn much from this book--it's really for people who know of and like his work. It's probably okay for a quick beginner but not a serious art student. Again, I like his work and buys his books as patronage.

A bit basic for me, but all the principles are sound. Highly recommended for one just starting out with a sketchbook and watercolors.

Disappointed!
After seeing that it was recommended y the Artist and Illustrator in an article they wrote with some wonderful examples I had to have the book. Those articles were the best in the book and I felt that it didn't deliver more information than that. You could get those snippets free by going through the pages on Amazon. I really wanted more than it had

excellent
Companion to 'Freehand Sketching' this book introduces sketching through the medium of watercolour. The layout is perfect to take along with your kit out into the field or on a trip. Each page displays beautiful sketches and 'in-process' illustrations and exercises with equally thoughtful and perceptive writing about the idea and purpose of watercolour sketching. As one returning to the practice of sketching I applaud this book for its concise thought, practical advice and handy format.
