Decent big band video.
It’s what I expected.

big band, yes- jazz and swing, no.
this set of 6 discs contains about 60 short films from the 1930s and 40s, each lasting about 10 minutes. Total playing time 648 minutes, with good video quality (bearing in mind the age of the material). The musicianship of the band members and the quality of the girl singers who front many of the bands is first class (a great pity that many of the singers are now forgotten). So why only 2 stars? Because the product is styled "Big Band, Jazz & Swing" whereas nearly all the groups are dance bands, with not much swing and virtually no jazz. If dance music is your choice, you're in for a treat, but if you're looking for jazz, save your money. PS many of the films include acts and if you like tap dancing, you wont be disappointed.

Dissapointed
When the dvds arrived I did not watch all of the many performances in the first 30 days. Because of a manufacturing defect, some of the performances on one disc froze and were unwatchable. I contacted Warner Bros. twice but never received a response. All I wanted was replacement of one disc. I sent an email to Oldies, the company that filled my order. Oldies responded that they would not do anything because more than 30 days had elapsed. I am not blaming them for the problem. I do blame them for not providing decent customer service.I certainly blame Warner Bros. for not standing by their products. I will never do business with either of them again. Caveat Emptor!

YouTube on DVD.
It's nice to have this on DVD, but I've seen most of these videos on YouTube.

ripped off again
My advice is to NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT. I purchaed thid DVD-R some months ago, it will not play on my Sony play back machine. This is not the first I have been ripped off by Warner Bros. Cheap productd. DVD-r sucks. I have purchased several WB films and several will not play. I will delete WB from my buy list. WB is dead to me.

Has One of the Most Amazing All-Woman Big Bands Ever
Incredible footage of some really wonderful musicians. Look particularly for the all-woman group Frances Carroll & 'The Coquettes'. Amazing talent! Most of the big names are here but there are plenty of lesser-known bands that should have been better known....

Five Stars
This was a gift but you can't go wrong with the Big Band, Jazz and Swing era.

A magnificent compilation of later Jazz and Dance Bands
This compilation of 6 DVD's with a total of 63 theatrical shorts of Dance and Jazz Bands covers the period from 1932 to 1946. This is the best set I have seen, the films are in pristine condition and are shown complete, unlike other issues that are edited. Bands represented include Eddie Duchin, Isham Jones, Ben Pollack, Red Nichols, Cab Callaway, Jimmy Dorsey, Artie Shaw, Hal Kemp, Glen Gray, Jan Savitt, Woody Herman....too many to list! Disc 2 is devoted to black artists and include Noble Sissle, Ethel Waters, and Adelaide Hall in stunning performances. Warner Bros are to be congratulated in bringing together such talent and if you are interested in this period of music, you will not be disappointed, buy it before is disappears for ever.
