Hi rascal1957, there is a solid back behind the piece of paper that you are seeing in the product image. If you are asking if this arm could extend in front of your computer monitor to suspend a magnifying sheet in front of the screen this will not work because the paper is not suspended on its own. Q: Is this unit strong enough that I could write on a document while it's elevated?

I think it's sturdy enough to write on a document. I actually have a 8x10 piece of styrofoam clipped in it and use it as a needle and thread holder for cross stitch. I'm always pushing needles in and pulling them out and exerting pressure on the document holder and its held up nicely for well over a year. It's a great set up. Heavy base and easily adjustable. I tried a bunch of pattern holders but they never held up or were big enough. I would say it's quite sturdy.
