Bela-Olhao Sardines In Cayenne Pepper Sauce - 4.25 Oz - Case Of 12

Flavor and quality is excellent !

I am never without these in my pantry.

When I opened the can I was greeted by 3 very large sardines.Often people assume fatter sardines are lower quality than the skinny brisling Sardines but this isn't necessarily the case.The thinner sardines are simply a different species than the ones that are fished from the Mediterranean and western European coast of the Atlantic. Thin Sardines (brislings) are fished from the Baltic.These, being from Portugal are fished off of the Atlantic coast near the Mediterranean. These are Portuguese Sardines which are naturally larger, so before buying, be aware of that.After opening the can, I ate the Sardines on a couple of pieces of toasted sourdough bread. I drizzled some of the olive oil from the can on to some of the bread as well.They had a very good flavor. They were a little fishy but not too fishy. They were also very firm which is always indicative of a quality sardine. They did not fall apart when picked up with a fork.The olive oil was very delicious. They added to the nice flavor of the fish.However, I do need to subtract 1 star for the simple reason that these weren't really spicy at all like they were advertised. I couldn't taste much of anything in the way of spices, and usually when I spend over 2 dollars a can on sardines I usually at least expect a pepper, or an olive, or something included in the can as a garnish, this did not have any of that.Other than that however, I will say, these are good sardines if you don't mind the fatter species of Atlantic and Mediterranean sardines, and even if you're like me and prefer the smaller brisling sardines, you'll still most likely enjoy the flavor of these.
