The Walking Dead, Vol. 10: What We Become

Walking Dead gathers steam again
Walking Dead, Volume 10 reprints issues 55-60 of the comic book series and continues to chronicle the survivors' journey toward Washington DC. While the The Walking Dead, Vol. 9: Here We Remain offered a bit of a pause in the action and set up future story lines, this installment is quite a bit more intense. A recurring theme is the changes that living in a world filled with zombies has wrought on the cast and the tensions that run high amongst the humans even as they should be acting as one to enhance their continued survival. But lest you think that this story arc is nothing more than angst and emotional drama, the zombies make their presence felt in new and sufficiently scary ways as well.Walking Dead has been around long enough that it would be easy for Robert Kirkman, the author, to have fallen into a major rut. Thankfully, I see little evidence of that. There was a major shakeup in the The Walking Dead, Book 8: Made to Suffer and the book now features a nice mix of old and new characters. In a series that has been filled with death, horror, and action, we find some of the most intense scenes yet in this volume in the form of two characters sitting and talking about what they've seen and done since the world changed. The scene is both heart rending and oddly uplifting at the same time and represents some of Kirkman's finest writing to date.Walking Dead is one of the best ongoing series in print and these collected volumes are a great way to read the stories. I would recommend the series to anyone who wants a good read, but this specific volume is clearly best suited to those who have already read everything up to this point. If you're new to the series, by all means go check out The Walking Dead, Vol. 1: Days Gone Bye (v. 1) . For those who stopped at volume 8 or 9 and weren't sure if they wanted to get on board with the new direction my advice is to jump in with both feet and enjoy stories that are both good on their own terms while showing great promise for what is still to come.

I watched the TV show first (caught up as of 3/6/2016) before reading and holy crap these are awesome
I've purchased all volumes up to 22 and the TV show has just about caught up to wear I am in the novels. These books are friggen awesome. I don't read much and my buddy lent me VOL 1 after he knew I liked the show. Well, I burned through the first one and then just went on a tear buying 4 volumes at a time...the price is pretty good for what you get out of these. $9-$15 is the range I've paid per novel, I'm not sure why they aren't the same but anyways, I keep buying them none the less. The story was written before the TV Show and the show follows the story but there is some differences. The written story is more violent and graphic then the tv show but the tv show does a decent job of sticking with main ideas. I've noticed that certain plot things that happen in the book also happen in the show but there is a unique twist like a different character it happens to or something like that. Which makes reading these volumes great cuz I have some idea of where the story is going (after having watched all tv episodes) but there are still surprises. If you like the TV show and haven't read these, give it a try and you will get a whole new experience of the Walking Dead story. I'm putting this same review under every volume I've purchased (1-22) so people can see it. go buy these!

Story keeps getting deeper
Boy do I love the Walking Dead. My only complaint is that I have to wait so long between trade paperback releases. The story keeps moving along and the characters are certainly deep. I'm the sort of person who guesses plot twists in movies 10 minutes into watching them and the Walking Dead definitely keeps me guessing. That's one of my favorite aspects of the story, it doesn't treat the reader like an idiot. The other thing that I love is that the characters act like real people not like a necessary devise used to scare you or for cheap thrills. For example, characters change their minds, are loyal followers and then finally get fed up with things and change direction. They do stupid things that are motivated by emotion and stress rather than stupid things motivated by an author attempting to leave you with a cliffhanger.Kirkman understands the medium. I only hope that when Hollywood "discovers" him they don't ruin his creativity. His writing is simple and that's the key to his success. Although successful simple writing takes time which other media doesn't have the patience for. Image and the Walking Dead are good partners in this creativity by allowing the story to progress without rushing things along before their due time.I plan to continue buying these books. I've been hooked since issue 1.

Good, but I Wanted More
This volume has a little more subtlety in comparison with the previous volumes. I say that because they're are a few good breathtakers, but not as much as its predecessors. The most important part of this book is a one-on-one conversation between Rick and Abraham. It was really valuable and its something to carry the series further. The only reason why i give it 4/5 is that I didn't receive the almighty cliffhanger that Kirkman usually gives me. I ended up with a lot of questions by the end, and although I am anxious for more, I still wish these things didn't cost so much! (It adds up)I can't say its bad or a letdown primarily because I couldn't stop reading it. The Walking Dead still has it. I have no problem with it sucking me in and manipulating my sleep patterns. While its not the best of the series, its certainly not the worst and not giving sign of worse to come. Its basically another calm that tells us the worst is yet to come.

Pure hell!
Season 10 continues, and most of the main characters are still in!! Surprisingly Rick is still alive after all the beatings hes taken. It sees the desperate lengths Rick will go to protect his son, theres a very nasty part in the book which when you get to it, you will be glad to see Rick taking charge again and standing up for what he believes in! In season 9 he didnt do that. Overall the book is as gripping as the previous ones.As a woman, people think its alittle odd me reading these books, but to be honest i dont normally read things like this, as im not really into comic books at all. It just shows how fantastic they really are for me to read them, everything from the writting and the very realistic drawings. Cant put them down once i start reading them!! These books really are for men and women too!!!A definate must buy!!

Wow
Robert Kirkman does it again! The comic is simply stunning, not only is the story compelling, but the illustration that matches it, creating an ultimate duo of awesomeness. This is a highly recommended comic for all who have an interest for Zombies. It's not only a Zombie story with gore, etc, there are 3d characters and emotion, which the Zombie apocalypse is simply a backdrop. The price for this is a catch. BUY IT NOW!!!

Wow
This series is amazing. I don't normally read graphic novels, but I wanted to try something different when I received my kindle Fire HD. I like horror stories and decided to give these books a go. They're more than just horror, they're about human nature and how people would react to such cataclysmic changes in their lives. Amazing work and a joy to read.

Wonderfully grim.
Just as harsh and great as always, no major plot developments here. But we do get to learn some more about characters introduced end of last issue, imagine will sadly take a little while to get back to epicness of the governor arc but still does not mean is some great reading. So addictive tho, want more and more

Deadly Read :)
Have bought all the volumes for my son who is a massive Walking Dead fan. We do all watch the TV programme together, but he loves these graphical novels, they are very well drawn and the story is a little different from the TV program so if you enjoy the program I think these are a great read. :)
