Vital for cats with pale skin and fur

Cats with pale ears can and do get skin cancer on these delicate areas. I’ve known several cats who’ve had to have their ears amputated, because of skin cancer. You must protect sensitive areas. My cat is white and as you can see in the photos, she has white skin around her ear and very thin hair on the outside of her ears. I will not allow her outside without this sunscreen. I used it on another cat, a tortoiseshell who again had very thin hair on her ears.First of all, safety. You MUST NOT use human sunscreen on cats. Cats are extremely sensitive to chemicals and they could die. The other non clear version of this is ok, but you have to be very careful, this clear version is the safest. This also contains something that makes it taste horrible. Do check with your vet, particularly if your cat has any allergies or kidney or liver issues. With either Aniwell sunscreen you need to give it a chance to dry before your cat tries to wash it off. This is important. Either hold them or distract them for a few minutes, once it’s dried it’s much safer. It’s clear when dried. It’s the consumption of the product that’s dangerous. This clear version goes on white, so you can see what you’re doing. With white and pink ears apply over the exterior and interior parts of the ear. Don’t go into the ear, just the inside ear bit, it that makes sense. Don’t forget to pop some on that funny fold on the edge of the ear. I find it easier to squeeze a bit of the cream on the nearest finger to my thumb, then, push my thumb into it, so it’s coated too. Then you can do the inside and outside of the ear at the same time. You don’t need masses, just enough to cover the area.Once a day should be sufficient, if you can it’s still advisable to keep them in at the ‘mad dogs and English men’ time of day, i.e. the hottest around 12.00 to 2/3.00, but the cream should provide the required protection.Every 4 days you need to wash the cream off, a cotton pad does the trick, then allow to dry before you use the product again. It’s also suitable for other animals, but read the information on the Anniwell website and check with your vet.

    Good product

This really is very difficult to get off your cat's skin once it is on there - even after 3 days of it being on there. I suppose that is good in some ways, but not in others. You have to rub fair bit to get it off, which might potentially cause soreness to the cats ears. I have not noticed particularly that it stops my cat getting sunburnt on her pale ears, but the fact that I haven't noticed any sunburn on her ears whilst using it must mean it's working. And hopefully it will stop skin cancers developing on her ears.
