Great for kids
Great book for toddlers up to elementary age kids. I love the examples of ways to deal with anger and that it acknowledges that feelings are healthy but they need to be dealt with in a healthy way. I also liked how it showed that not everything will work every time but there are different options to try. Finally I love how the parents model how to calm down.

Wonderful author and great messages in the books for kids!
This shows exactly how my son behaves and he relates to the book. Michael Gordon is one of his favorite authors. He asks to read at least one of his books every night! Mr. Gordon's books deal with real emotions kids go through and offers ways to help guide kids to deal with them.

Excellent book!
“It is not fun feeling mad.” This is the sentence that sparks the whole book.A young boy Josh faces some challenges where anger creeps in. Should he “blow his top” like the tea kettle that comes to a boil? The author, Michael Gordon explores some different ways to deal with anger.Josh notices his heart rate increases, he breathes heavy and he grits his teeth when he gets angry! He also clenches his fist and feels his chest getting tight. I feel it is important to be able to check in with one’s body in connection to emotions being experienced. This is from my own 25 years of work as a psychiatric nurse working in a hospital.Children are capable of understanding the changes that their body feels. One way to deal with anger is balling it up and throwing it away! The drawings in this book are very good animating the angry balls of fire that Josh throws away!Another technique described in this book by Josh’s sister is counting to 4 & taking a deep breath. Joshua’s parents are quite supportive in helping Josh cope with his anger responses to different situations. His dad deep breathes with him and his mother gives him positive praise for calming down and not letting anger ruin his day.The things I liked about this book are how the family is involved, looking for body cues that let a child know they are feeling angry and some different techniques to explore coping with anger. It is a feeling and it will go away!

cute
I’ve read this before reading to my grandkids. It’s hard to rate this before reading to them and particularly seeing if they try any of the techniques, but I think they’ll like the book.

HOLD THAT TEMPER
Gordon explores the topic of anger and how to handle it with preschoolers. This picture book features a preschooler named Josh who loses his sweet temperament rapidly when he becomes angry. So, when he wants to eat cake instead of lunch, go off alone to play with his friends or demands a pet, he becomes furious. His mom, dad, and older sister suggest ways to control it. He could pretend it to be a giant fireball to be thrown away, count to four or breathe deeply. Will Josh be able to practice these techniques to control his bad temper?Larin has done a good job of providing age appropriate colorful illustrations to help toddlers and preschoolers understand the lessons of the tale, Recommended for children ages two through five.
