I read tons of reviews before I actually purchased. I looked at tons (TONS) of shelving units but kept coming back to this one. So I bought it. It took several days to arrive even though I have prime. (Something about it being heavy and taking longer. Whatever.) But it was fine. Box was damaged when it arrived (not Amazon or Closetmaids fault). I was super worried the shelf would be damaged like several reviews had complained. The box was lined with about inch thick Styrofoam all around. Nothing was damaged. (Woohoo.) I took extra time to read the directions completely and organized all the hardware (yes, I'm THAT kind of person). Directions were easy to follow. It's pictures and letters. I made an error with the pegs but it was easily fixable. (Should of looked at the picture a little closer to know which hole they went in.) But that was my mistake. The unit was really steady with just the sides, middle, top and bottom. I was worried we'd need to brace it, but it had no wobble. Yes, the back is cardboard. No, I didn't feel the need to buy a different backing. I would expect for $200 to get a little sturdier backing, but it's ok. Total set up time was about an hour, including my mistake. We took our time and made sure everything was tightened and nailed in place. I didn't use any glue or loktite. I also didn't secure to the wall as it is super stable. I'll be adding LED lights (I forgot to order extra connectors) to the shelves to showcase my tarantula collection, which was the whole purpose of the purchase. I'm really happy with how it turned out.

This is made from seemingly porous, cheap & questionable particle board, but once put together, it is very sturdy, easy to move & is an impressive height. I'm happy with it which is good since I bought 2. They look nice next to one another. I would have liked if the shelves weren't so thick & there were more of them. I'm cutting some other boards to add more shelves & will drill holes to set them with dowel pegs. Good product for an affordable price.

I've put together a lot of bookcases over the years by myself and this bookshelf was one of the easiest, quickest, and is definitely the lightest I've ever put together of this size. I love it.It looks great and very easy assembly. There were a couple of minor flaws/chips but it wasn't a big deal and once it was put together I couldn't even see them.

I did not expect it to be core board and flimsy. When built, it was super unsteady and we could see it was leaning a little forward. After putting books on it, it appeared to stay put. It’s ok for bow, but definitely don’t expect it to last long.

Great bookcase. Nice and tall. Very solid.Tip: install the shelves as they say in the instructions. I Hesitated because I thought it was going to scratch the cabinet and they would not fit but as it turns out it does fit very snug and makes the whole thing rocksolid

I bought two of these. Products, once assembled, are okay.Two big problems:1. None of the wood pieces came labeled. Instructions refer to pieces by letters to differentiate them, but without any labels I had to figure it all out myself. I bought two of these and neither of them came labeled.2. The very top shelf of both of the bookcases I bought was drilled wrong so that it doesn’t match up flush with the rest of the bookcase. I’ve seen this mentioned in other buyers’ reviews, so this must be a pretty common issue.Really clearly a very cheaply and sloppily packed product, but if you take the time and effort to figure out how to put it together I’m honestly not too upset with the finished product.

I liked that the boards are thick and sturdy (the back is like cardboard, though). It was relatively easy to assemble. I love that it's so tall and there's a lot of room to put things. I also like that there are holes in the bottom of the shelves so that instead of just sitting on the little holders, they have points that go into the boards - this keeps the shelves from sliding off.One problem we had is that the very top of the bookcase (the top board) didn't have the holes in the correct place, so the board doesn't line up correctly and there's a little gap in the front (with a corresponding small overhang in the back).Overall, a good product, though. We like it even with its minor flaws.

Larger than I expected, but perfect. Replaced another in my son's room. He is thrilled with it. Sturdy, thick shelves. Easy to put together (would have been even easier if I was 3 inches taller). I had to brace it on the side instead of the top, because of me being vertically challenged.Overall, I would definitely recommend this shelf.
