This book is long past due. FInally someone that a real approach to addiction and how to manage and recover. The approach covered in this book is well , it's more approachable. It's gives room for recovery by having the individual look at their accomplishments and celebrate them rather using guilt or shaming them. It's an absolute must read for anyone dealing with addiction of their own or family or friend

This book can change lives!
Mr Ken is my favorite psychologist, the way he writes is full of practical information, experience, kindness and compassion. I'm so grateful for his work (and that he finds the time to write to help more people). This book is simple to follow and has it all - the what. the why, and the how.The uncomfortable truth is- we all have some addictions, it's just that some of them seem more socially acceptable, or don't seem to ruin our lives for now. What we all need to understand is the reason behind why we get addicted to some things...And it always comes down to some unprocessed traumas or stress.A must read, especially during those challenging times. Thank You Ken for yet another helpful book!

A useful and practical book
The author has worked for 25 years in the field of addictions so he has a solid knowledge base to draw from.He used a strength based approach, suggesting that the reader focused forward to goals instead of fighting the problem. He speaks about countering past feelings of guilt and shame by building a sense of pride by recognising personal strengths. He offers a good overview of the addictive process and a comprehensive range of recovery tools. I like that he included the role of trauma in addictions and gave some suggestions about the process of recovery from trauma. I also particularly liked the chapter on families.

Practical and well-written
The book does a great job articulating how drug and alcohol addiction develops, evidence-based interventions and treatments, along with practical tools to remain sober for the long term. There's a combination of science, research, and decades of funerals the author attended due to drug and alcohol abuse. A quote that resonates is, "Every small choice we make today has the potential to change our future dramatically." In a nutshell, you won't be disappointed with the context.

Must Read on How Addiction Works, and How it is Overcome
Not enough written on how addiction affects the brain. This book is a great tool for not only understanding, but taking simple (I did not say easy) measures to step out of the grip of addiction. Our culture treats addiction as if it is a tattoo to the face. Overcoming is not impossible. This books helps one understand this. I highly recommend. Elizabeth T. McKinney

A primer on addiction, but not the end all be all
This is a great book that introduces the reader to addictions. We may have an addiction, one way or another, with something. I like the analogies and the confidence the book instills in the reader. It has lots of tips and advice. I appreciate the real-life examples that it uses and helps me understand the experience of addiction better. This book is easy to read and educational. I recommend.
