Schubert: Die Schöne Müllerin, Winterreise, Schwanengesang 1

Three excellent recordings of the song cycles, plus an interesting (if somewhat over-directed) film of a "staged" performance of Winterreise (mostly in a recreated room from the Friern Barnet asylum). Very good value (provided that you have an alternative source of the words - in fact for anything other than the bare facts as there is no booklet at all).

Beautiful performances by all the artists, a collection to treasure. I went on to buy Ian Bostridge's book `Schubert's Winter Journey: anatomy of an obsession` which is full of good things, part biography of Winterreise with Bostridge's own translation into English of these wonderful poems setting them in context for us and our individual journeys, part autobiography of Bostridge himself and his exploration of life's journey. I was uncertain about the dramatization of Winter's Journey on the accompanying DVD but it certainly helped me focus new attention to the song cycle. Buy these and be enchanted.

Amazing! Since I have bought this collection I have not listened to much else. Ian Bostridge's interpretations of Schubert's Lieder are uniquely sublime.
