Never Forgotten!
I saw this film when it was first released and have always remembered it. It is quite haunting and shot and directed really well. Tommy Lee Jones looks really handsome in it, which is also a real bonus and Barbara Streisand's music is beautuful.

is a 1978 American neo-noir supernatural thriller starring Faye Dunaway and Tommy Lee Jones, directed by Irvin Kershner. The screenplay was adapted (in collaboration with David Zelag Goodman) from a spec script titled Eyes, written by John Carpenter; it was Carpenter's first major studio film. H. B. Gilmour later wrote a novelization.Producer Jon Peters, who was dating Barbra Streisand then, bought the screenplay as a starring vehicle for her, but Streisand eventually decided not to take the role because of "the kinky nature of the story", as Peters later explained. As a result, the role went to Dunaway, who had just won an Oscar for her performance in Network. Streisand nevertheless felt that "Prisoner", the torch song from the film, would be a good power ballad vehicle for her. She sang it on the soundtrack and garnered a moderate hit as a result (the record peaked at number 21 on the Billboard Hot 100).Eyes of Laura Mars is said to be an example of an American version of the Italian Giallo genre. Peters commissioned photographer Helmut Newton to provide the images that stand in for Laura Mars' portfolio. The film is also noted for its use of red herrings and twist ending.

Through A Lens Darkly
!!!WARNING. CONTAINS SPOILERS!!!!Fashion photgrapher Laura Mars(Faye Dunaway) is quite a celebrity on the New York scene. Her photos, which portray a kind of arty, stylised violence are very popular. The Laura experiences a terrifying vision involving one of her friends being murdered. When she attends an Award Ceremony the following night her vision has become a reality. Her friend Doris Spenser has been murdered. Laura has many friends around her, but are they protectors or possible suspects. There's flamboyant manager Donald Phelps(Rene Auberjonois), sinister ex-husband Mike(Raul Julia) and recently relelased prison inmate, and biggest red herring/suspect Tommy Ludlow(Brad Dourif). As the body count rises,John Neville(Tommy Lee Jones), the detective assigned to the case, starts to make some starling discoveries about the life of Laurs Mars. Laura just wants the killer caught, as her visions become more vivid and violent...Don't get me wrong. I enjoyed 'The Eyes Of Laura Mars'. I love all things 70's, so the recreation of the flamboyant club scene, complete with terrific soundtrack and Helmut Newton's gaudy photography, make this film an enjoyable, 'time capsule' experience. The performances are pretty good too. Dunaway is a little too overwrought at times, but Rene Auberjonois is a hoot as Donald, especially when in drag, hitting N.Y.P.D's finest with a handbag, and Brad Dourif is suitably O.T.T as Tommy, a role that sets up his career of playing bug eyed psychos very nicely. However, it's the plot that lets the film down a bit. A glaring example of this is when Neville shows Laura real crime scene photos and shows there is a striking similarity between these and her own photos. An interesting direction for the plot to go in, never explored properly. There are various big contrivances to allow the story to continue to its supposedly shock 'twist' ending. The visions of murder that Laura experiences are effective to start with but become a bit repetetive after a while. The afore-mentioned twist ending is best viewed as the murderer wanting to be a part of one of Laura's pieces of 'art'. I think that 'The Eyes Of Laura Mars' is best watched as an American recreation of a giallo film, stylish with not much substance but highly enjoyable all the same.I'm a big fan of John Carpenter's work. What I would say is that it was a shame that he only wrote the script for this film, as if he had been in the director's chair, this film would have been very interesting indeed. As it is, it remains a very minor entry in Carpenter's superb resume. This DVD Region 2 release is a decent affair, with some extras and decent picture/sound. 4 out of 5.

A So-So Movie With Some Great Insight Added.
Successful and controversial photographer Laura Mars (Faye Dunaway) is making a killing off her brand of 'violent chic' pictures in the fashion and art world. But someone also decides to start killing her models and crew members. Added to the suspense is that Laura can psychically see this murders taking place from the killers eyes, and that the aftermath of murders resemble some of Laura's famed photos. A deranged psycho, a angry feminist, or someone close to Laura with an axe to grind? Detective John Neville (Tommy Lee Jones) is on the case, and skeptical of Laura's psychic visions and certain people on her crew. In protecting her, the two grow fond of one another, which seem to escalate the murders even more, and getting closer to Laura. Will John be able to save her in time...? For those that never seen the movie, it's a good watch. But over 40 years later I still remember the outcome, and didn't hold any surprises for me. A great cast still, and well shot with a great soundtrack of old disco classics. But what impressed me are the extras added to this release. Pointing out John Carpenter wrote the script pretty well alongside his making of Halloween. And how Eyes Of Laura Mars is really an Americanization of cult favorite Italian 'giallo films', and how those came to be. Though I'm not much a fan of horror and slasher movies, it was interesting to learn how this movie was in way a homage to the Italian style, yet was pretty tame to the slasher films that Carpenter and others would eventually follow with. Big thumbs up to PH Indicator, and hope they keep up the great work in salvaging and educating movie fans with their interesting choices!
