Review: A gorgeous well made digest of 75 years of Marvel - While I heartily agree with the other review I have to say it is not a companion to the other book. It is in fact a sub-set of the larger tome. If you own the larger book you in effect already have this. Having said that if you do not own Roy's 75 Years of Marvel this is great digest version that I would recommend as a cheaper alternative. It is really well made and certainly less of a body building exercise to read. Review: and excellent stuff. - This is the definitive history of how Marvel comics conquered the world, from the creation of the first modern superheroes through to the final departure of master artist Jack Kirby, by the man who succeeded Stan Lee as editor in charge of the whole line. Essential reading, and excellent stuff.

Beautifully-presented nostalgia-trip
This was a treat-to-self and it didn't disappoint: beautifully presented account of Marvel's bronze age era, the artwork and presentation of this (substantial) hardback is a delight to flick through.

A treasure of a book
'The Marvel Age of Comics' is a wonderful companion to Roy Thomas's own 2014 '75 Years of Marvel' (also published by Taschen). While it has roughly half as many pages as the earlier volume, it still packs in an amazing number of breathtakingly colourful illustrations from the original comics, and every page is filled with fascinating information about the people who wrote and drew the stories. The production of the book is classically Taschen: high gloss quality reproductions with vibrant colours in a beautifully bound volume. The Marvel Age of Comics is a treasure of a book. Like the 2014 volume, it is a beautiful book. But it is far easier to read because it isn't as large and heavy: I can read it without feeling like a 97Ib weakling. Only Roy Thomas, who served as an apprentice to Stan Lee, and eventually succeeded him as Marvel's editor and chief writer could have written such an authoritative but affectionate book about Marvel. Comic books, especially those produced by Marvel in the 60s, are part of the very fabric of my childhood, and Roy Thomas has made it come alive with his wonderful book. Thank you, Mr Thomas.

Great value for a hardback.
I have collected comics since I was 6 years old, and have always enjoyed a good read. I have read quite a few books about comics, DC, EC, and Marvel and this volume is up there with the best. Whilst one can always learn more, this book by Roy Thomas has some real surprises. He should know as he has worked for both Marvel and DC and written quite a few comics and history of comics so this guy is a must-read. I have read most books about the history of Marvel comics, but this is more about the characters and superheroes and goes into great detail about the cover, the art, reasoning, and the stories. Excellent. Well done Taschen!

Superb... The scope of this volume is terrific and the insights of Roy Thomas are invaluable, and he is clearly the best placed person to write this account of 1961 - 1978 at Marvel. The selection of covers and interior pages throughout is astute, and Roy remains "a fan" who became a consummate professional... the first writer there at Marvel after (and alongside) Stan Lee to really scope and shape the Marvel Universe, and greatly trusted by Stan to do so with literate, powerfully scripted stories. Not that this tome is only the story of Roy Thomas... it glides seamlessly across the great panorama of early Marvel creators, and its visual choices, and quality of reproduction is stunning. One rankle I have is that this history does not give Barry Windsor-Smith enough credit. Roy and Barry as co-creators of Conan the Barbarian since 1971 need to be more fully represented here. There are only a couple of Windsor-Smith illustrations from early Conan reproduced, and his style and impact needed to be more fully included and discussed. There is ample scope given to Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko, of course, as the bedrock of early Marvel... and then we see very good coverage of many of the "next wave" of Marvel artists... Jim Steranko and Neal Adams in particular. The other artist who ranks with these two in terms of impact on the style and calibre of comic-art since 1971 was Barry Windsor-Smith, and Conan the Barbarian in its first 24 issues was a huge leap forward in Marvel's illustrative growth. That said, apart from under-representing Windsor-Smith... everything else in this volume is full, fearless and magnificent... you could not hope for a sounder summary of early Marvel's revolution in comic-books. Incredibly well done, Roy Thomas.

Fica a recomendação.

While it may be similar to the larger book, it's much more manageable. This book is different from most other books on Marvel, the way he breaks down the historic significance is fantastic. Lots of great cover photos and interior art pages. A great lesson in comic book history.

A comprehensive look at The House Of Ideas, and their tribulations. A bit shortsighted with regard to some characters or events, but still great fun.
