‘The Eternal Zero’ delivers great combat scenes but gives the viewer so much more!
All region DVD. ‘The Eternal Zero’ thwarted my expectations and gave me so much more than a simple war movie. Round Head Ryan could learn a lot!The film begins with a young brother and sister finding out their grandfather was their mother’s second husband and that the grandfather, whose DNA they share, lived a complicated life and died in despair as a Kamikaze pilot in 1945.The man’s history is relived from Pearl Harbor to Midway to Guadalcanal... There are a few seconds of weak CGI, but watching operations aboard the Akagi is amazing! Plenty of combat, dogfights and accurately researched historical detail make the WWII scenes take on a greater sense of meaning and motivation. The closer-than-brothers bonds forged between good men in the hell of combat gives the viewer a truly heart-changing look at what life in war does to motivate acts of bravery, love and compassion between those men.I bought ‘The Eternal Zero’ for the cool aerial dogfight scenes, but ended up leaking a few tears by the end. The VFX delivered bigtime! But, the transformational story delivered an unexpected personal depth that very few films ever achieve. Highly recommended.

Balance of Drama and Action Uncommon for War Movies
Expected a lot more action and combat scenes out of the gate, and was worried at first as the movie edged towards becoming a boring talking head documentary with little action. Fortunately this was just a clever set up as things quickly became much more engaging, with the action and drama scenes well balanced and playing off of each other. Drama pieces avoided the typical boring love story tropes common in war movies, managing to build a unique story as engaging as the action. In the end this movie is one of the best balances of action and drama I have ever seen. I am not usually a fan of drama but this is one I can watch again and again, with every character linked together intelligently and a few new bits to pick up with each watching.

Excellent film for many audiences
This is one of the best films I have seen in many years. I didn't really know what to expect, and it started slowly. But it was incredibly interesting and would appeal to many audiences, not simply to people who were interested in World War II, or the Zero fighter plane. It had history, drama, and many twists and turns. I could not recommend the movie more highly, and it was delivered quickly and exactly as advertised, thank you!

While I completely enjoyed the movie you have to remember that during the ...
While I completely enjoyed the movie you have to remember that during the complete different mindset of the Japanese culture of the years prior to WWII. the Japanese were indoctrinated from birth that the Emperor was a god and it was they're duty to die for him if called to do so. This movie picks up in modern day Japan with the death of two siblings Grandmother and their search for information about her first husband who was a Zero pilot and Kamikaze pilot during WWII. That is about as far as I will go into the movie. While the flight scenes were exciting and looked good. I am not now nor have ever been a pilot, and have never seen a dogfight, during Viet Nam there weren't many dogfights. The CG and special effects were great and uniforms pretty much spot on from all of my reference books. The mannerism of the people and soldiers were that of a fanatic people that truly believed in what they were fighting for. Last the subtitles are really good someone took the time to do a good job translating this one.

English Subtitles do work.
All throughout the movie I kept saying "Oh Wow" And at the ending of the movie I said Whoa! It was very moving. I bought this movie because of one person's review. He bought it for the aerial dog fights. Sure, the dogfights were good but short. Many other things such as the movie as a whole were fantastic. I believe it gave me a better understanding of things back then. Well worth buying. A movie you might watch more than twice that is for sure.

Wow!
I can’t heap enough praise on this film. The film is quite well acted and paced perfectly....IMHO. I’m also a history buff, war film aficionado and a WWII aircraft enthusiast who usually turns up his nose at CGI effects. However, the effects in this film were not overblown or gratuitous. I am completely blown away that I knew absolutely nothing about this production until I inserted the DVD in the player. I was not disappointed in the least! Well worth the viewing!

Kamikaze pilots were not crazy. They were very human.
Follows one Japanese Zero pilot through World War 2. All the combat footage one could want. Also follows his adult grandchildren in the present day as they seek to understand his decision to become a kamikaze pilot. Also dramatizes his widow's life in the wake of that decision. Very insightful, dramatized look into the hearts of Japanese pilots faced with complicated decisions.
