I regularly use it to move large game installation folders and video files between my desktop PC and my laptop. I was able to transfer a 20GB folder in just a couple of minutes, which is fantastic. For smaller files, it's nearly instant. My Primary Uses & Usability This drive's versatility is its biggest strength. It's become my go-to for a few key tasks: Semi-Permanent Laptop Storage: I leave it plugged into my laptop to carry files I need on the go, effectively expanding its storage without a bulky external drive. PC Building & Maintenance: It's the perfect drive for flashing motherboard BIOS updates on my PC builds. The SanDisk 1TB Ultra Fit USB 3.2 Gen 1 is one of those rare storage devices that feels almost unreal in the hand—because it practically isn’t there. The plug‑and‑stay design is barely larger than a fingernail, yet it delivers a full terabyte of storage in a form factor that disappears into a laptop, car stereo, or console without protruding or snagging. Out of the box, the usable capacity lands around 931GB, which is normal for flash storage; manufacturers calculate 1TB as one trillion bytes, while operating systems use binary measurement (1TB = 1,099,511,627,776 bytes), so the “missing” space is simply math, not a defect. Despite its tiny footprint, performance is surprisingly strong. Real‑world read speeds hover near the advertised 400MB/s, especially when transferring large, contiguous files. Write speeds are naturally lower—as expected for compact USB 3.2 Gen 1 drives—but still fast enough for media libraries, game installs, and bulk document transfers without feeling sluggish. Heat stays controlled during sustained writes, and the drive maintains stable throughput without the dramatic throttling common in ultra‑compact USB sticks. If you need massive storage in a device small enough to forget about, this is one of the most efficient, unobtrusive solutions available. This is an amazing and tiny but huge storage (1TB) USB flash drive. it's quick to store and retrieve and I even use it as my daily drive. I've had one for many years and just upgrade to the same model I liked it so much. I use this drive all day, every day year after year. I highly recommend this model and brand. Excellent product, great value to me. It weighs nothing and can be carried in a wallet. It came pre-formatted and is easily reformatted.

This is decent USB storage for the price. It is not the fastest USB SSD I have used (that would be a 2242 SSD module, inside a SSD to USB case), but this USB module is reasonably priced, sturdy, and compact in size (i.e. no more worries about a larger USB flash drive being knocked off of the computer). I am currently using the 256GB version of this module as a "boot drive" for the Raspberry Pi 5s I own. While this does use up a USB port on my Pis, this module runs faster than the builtin Pi micro-SD card boot option. And while I haven't had these drives long enough to know their longevity, I still suspect this this drive will last a lot longer than my previous micro-SD card option (as micro-SD cards are NOT built to last). As a final bonus, I was able to reformat my previous boot drive micro-SD card to be a simple data/storage drive, and plug that back into the SD card boot location of the Pi. Now, my Pi has the faster bootup space of this USB drive and also has the extra space from my older micro-SD card. From my perspective this is the best of both worlds. And the Pi even auto-mounts the extra SD card space (in my case to location "/media/pi/256 GB Volume"), so I can easily read/write files to the older micro-SD card whenever I want to.

Short answer: Suggest you don't buy the 400MB/s version of this Sandisk Fit drive (at least the current version in July 2023) Bought this new 400mb/sec Sandisk 512gb FIT drive (SDCZ430-512G-GAM46) to replace a Samsung 256gb FIT for a Linux standalone install because I needed more space. It took forever to transfer the data, but I didn't worry much about it at that time. But, when it took 30 minutes to boot the PC when the old drive took less than a minute, I decided that something was really wrong. I reformatted the drive and and tested it against the Samsung in Windows using Crystal Disk Mark. As you can see from the results, the Sandisk basically has a zero random write speed. This result was the same across two different Windows 11 computers and several test runs and parameters (The look of those two images was to distinguish between them. It's the same software and same tests run back to back. I've written WD/Sandisk to see if I have a bad drive or if this is the expected performance. As it is, though, this performance makes the drive unusable for any purpose unless all you are going to do is read files from it (but you still have to get them there first). Will update once I receive a reply from WD/Sandisk. Update 6 July 2023: Sandisk suggested the Fit drive I received is defective. Have ordered a replacement. Will update again once I have the replacement. Cudos to WD/Sandisk for their quick response. Update 8 July 2023: Received replacement. This is apparently a product issue overall. Performance of the replacement is nearly identical to the first. After the disappointing first tests with Crystal Disk Mark, I decided to expand the testing to an additional Windows 11 laptop and in Linux and against other thumb drives. If anything, the results were worse by comparison. I also did some less scientific tests moving files with the drives. These "real world" tests backed up the benchmarks. Simply put, there appears to be a serious issue with this product. For those who may be suspicious of benchmark testing, please remember that I only used the benchmarks after having a major issue with using the drive first. The tests were conducted with modern laptops (the oldest from 2020 and the newest a 2023 model). The USB slots were all 3.2 Gen 1 as well. And, I need to mention that I am not complaining because the write speeds are just slow. They are nearly 0 at times. In Ubuntu, running the built in disk test utility, I compared this drive with two other Sandisk USB thumb drives and two Samsung. Write speed averages below: This Sandisk USB 512gb drive (SDCZ430-512G-GAM46): 9MB/s Sandisk Extreme 64gb drive (probably 10 years old now): 40MB/s Sandisk Ultra Flair 64gb drive (2021): 43MB/s Samsung USB 3.2 Gen 1 256gb (2022): 74MB/s Samsung USB C 256gb (2022): 87MB/s (plugged into USB 4 port) Latency was also higher by a large margin with the Sandisk 512gb flash drive than any of the others. The write speed is not zero in this test because it is not a random write only test. Note that the two Samsungs are rated the same maximum read speed as the Sandisk 512gb (400MB/s). The other Sandisks, though faster than this 512gb Fit, are rated much slower. Two other things to note. First, the drive does get very hot, much hotter than the Samsungs. Also the capacity basis is different than the Samsungs as well. Windows and Linux see this 512gb drive as a 465gb capacity drive. The Samsung 256gb drives are truly their listed size. This is something I already knew and isn't a complaint, per se, but just a note.

Worked well for a music drive in my car for 22 months, then died. Left it plugged in pretty much the entire time, removing it only to add media a few times. It bricked suddenly and won't respond at all on the vehicle or computers. The heat out here is rough on media in vehicles so getting about 2 years is kind of expected. Happy with the drive as I paid $20, in 2024, but wouldn't be now at over 2x the price.

I was amazed at how small this is. I purchased for my music in my car the standard size would not let the cover in the car close with this one there is plenty of room.

I regularly transfer large video files and photo libraries, and the transfer rates are noticeably faster than my old flash drives. Moving a couple of gigabytes takes minutes instead of the tedious wait I used to endure. The claim about transferring a movie in under 30 seconds is accurate in my experience with USB 3.0 ports. The 128GB capacity gives me plenty of room for documents, media files, and backups. I use it to store my entire photo library with space to spare. The password protection feature (via downloadable software) is a nice security touch, though I haven't personally needed it yet. Minor notes: The drive does get slightly warm during heavy use, but nothing concerning. Also, make sure you have a USB 3.0 port to take full advantage of the speed - it works with USB 2.0 but will be significantly slower. Bottom line If you need reliable, fast, and unobtrusive storage expansion for your laptop or other devices, this drive is excellent value for the money. I was originally looking for a microsd card to put in my laptop to increase storage, but when I saw I could get 512gb in a 'stubby' USB3.2 stick I had to try it out. The way it's shaped there is barely a bump so it doesn't feel like it will get knocked off when I move my laptop around. And I could even leave it attached when I pack up my laptop bag. If I could make one gripe, the flash drive is so compact that there is really no way to carry (no loop or key ring to attach to something). So I would say that I am fearful of losing it, if I left it out on a table or dropped it (being so compact - would I even hear it?). The larger/longer sticks have that going for it. But I love how compact it is and will probably just leave it attached to the laptop indefinitely. Highly recommend!
