Stunning looks and sound at unbelievable price
The Loar are known for their range of very high quality hand made musical instruments - obviously at this price the Brownstone is not a hand made model but it's , having a solid Sitka spruce top and mahogany back/side. The brown satin finish is just beautiful and makes this guitar a real looker. It's an 00 scale guitar and looks like a 1920-1930 acoustic that should be on the knee of a blues man. The Brownstone doesn't come with a gig bag or hard case - having seen this guitar, you probably won't want anything less than a hard case to protect it - I found it difficult to get the information I needed on the dimensions of the guitar, but with a bit of research, found an Epiphone 940-EL0CS L-00 case that fits the guitar beautifully and offers a high level of protection for it. Perfect.Out of the box the guitar sounded great, had good intonation and the build quality was superb too - obviously the guitar hadn't been anything other than factory set-up and the action was just a little bit too high for comfort - I got this adjusted locally for me by a guitar tech who set the action perfectly for my playing style. With the default D'addario EJ16 strings, this guitar has lots of thick, dark bluesy and rock tones - it is actually very loud for its size - and the guitar tech tells me that the sound will get even better as the wood matures. It's a great guitar to play, it's a great guitar to look at, and the value is simply stunning - I've played acoustics costing twice the price of this one which don't look or sound as good or even have the high build quality of this one. This guitar is amazing. I have had probably about a dozen guitars in my time, and I would honestly say this is the first one I have ever felt was perfect from the moment I picked it up. It is comfortable, with a mid-size body and a wide-ish but not especially thick neck (I have quite big hands and this suits me). The sound is really nicely balanced, and does both finger-style and plectrum stuff really well. I have heard a few people say that the set up was not so good on theirs. I seem to have been lucky: the truss could perhaps do with the minorist of tweaks, but I doubt I'll even bother as mine plays really well. Finally, it looks magnificent. I think the only change I will make is to pop in some cream coloured string pegs, at the cost of two quid.Thoroughly recomended.
