Useful and handy reference
As a Building Surveyor I found this book a very useful go-to guide for any defects on site that I needed further guidance on. Its handy size makes it easy to carry around and its simplistic language and clear diagrams make it a very easy to read book not only for professionals but to the layperson as well.

Good read
Great Book, trying to remember everything about properties is difficult at best so this just lives in my work bag. I don't use it for reference it's more I look it over just to double what I already knew. I would say this is more on the engineering side but that works for me.

Good book for most common defects
Book is very good for understanding the basics of defect analysis. It goes through each element individually explaining the most common defects, how to spot them / what to look for, and possible solutions. This leads to the further understanding of preventative maintenance. It is well explained using technical terms but not in anyway overwhelming to a novice. It is pocket sized so is a fairly basic book by nature. Those looking for a detailed book of analysis with thorough explanations need not buy this. Pictures could be a bit better in terms of detail and some comparison images would have been helpful but again it is pocket sized. Overall it is good, although a bit pricey for what you get (£12.99 at time of writing). If it goes down to £5 or something it is well worth getting if you just want basic info.

Building Defects for the Lay person!
There is always the danger that this book might put you off buying a new house! However, the fact is that it points to a whole series of possible building defects that any house buyer or owner should be aware of. The book is written in very clear non-technical English and well illustrated. It might not replace a professional building survey but would certainly help the house owner understand what to watch out for. It is not a DIY guide to repairing defects but does describe many different defects with great clarity.

Some Interesting Material - But!
An interesting book but really quite limitited in the depth of information about the structural problems you might encounter when looking at a building.Perhaps I simply expected more from the book and am being too harsh when I consider the price of the book and the fact that it is a small paperpack book.

Good public facing book
Clear simple text to explain to public when to call in professional support or as a support book to help understand the technical report on a property. Very good text for the intended general public market.I recommend this book to my students in Welcome Week. It works as a first week read as a introduction to the subject and the coming studies. The flip side is if a student looking for a text to support your longer term study you will very quickly outgrow this book. Read in library rather than purchase as not enough technical depth. This should not put off a member of public from purchase as your needs are met in book. If public find they need more then this is point they should be bringing in professional support from a Chartered Building Surveyor.

A must buy for anyone dealing with properties.
An excellent book, A must for home buyers and those who are renovating properties, Plenty of illustrations and easy quick read guides and advice on a whole range of structural problems etc. What I like its strait to the point without lots of waffle and it fits nicely into the pocket.Excellent reference book, good index and great value for the price.
