Goldie Vance Vol. 1 (1)

Here's a contemporary Nancy Drew and a more diverse Veronica Mars.
This is a great mystery series for all ages. It is set in an alternate 1960s (one with no segregation) and the young girl, Goldie Vance, is the Nancy Drew for a new generation. I wish this had been around my daughters were small. Here's a feminist and pro-LGBT, anti-racism comic that is not preachy--all of that is background to the exciting mystery. The heroine is plucky and smart. The writing is good and the art is terrific. Yet topics that are best reserved for older readers are just that--reserved for older readers.

Nancy drew meets Kim possible!
Nancy Drew meets Kim possible in this graphic novel featuring a fantastic queer WOC MC and fabulous illustrations in a retro 70’s theme that left me wanting more!I thought this was a really good first Volume to a series. It really set up the characters and the plot line wonderfully; I love how much this reminded me of Nancy drew and Kim possible. It left and nostalgic to my childhood days of binge watching both. The graphic novel is set from the POV of 16 year old Goldie who works by day as a valet, in a hotel her father manages and by night as a detective, solving crimes for the hotel. Goldie was delightful. She was so dedicated to her work and her crush on Diane was a highlight for me. She’s badass and I look forward to seeing how her character evolves in graphic novels to follow. The plot was good yet a little bizarre. Some of it was hard to believe but maybe that’s the adult in me; childhood Shan would have adored this. The art was amazing, all the characters were done really well and there was so much detail in the background.Overall, I loved this graphic novel and I look forward to continuing. My only issue was how quickly it ended. I felt it needed at least another issue to answer more questions. However we have some more volumes so my questions may be answered then.

A fun detective story
Goldie Vance is a 16 year old girl who works at the hotel her father manages, and hopes to one day be the hotel's in-house detective. It's like Lumberjanes meets Nancy Drew. The story is fun, action-packed, and knows not to take itself too seriously, while the art is bright and cartoony, which really works with the story.
