I belieive it is because silicone isn't made with BPAs. The unit is quite soft and pliable.

It depends. It's not stackable such as nesting. However, the top has these little overflow ports that permit expansion when the water freezes. The little ports provide a flat surface that will support another unit easily. I only have one but I have rested other items on top of it. As long as what you're balancing sits on at least 4 of the ports it will rest nicely.
