Gets right to the point on how more than why
I started meditating recently and I have read a few really thick books on what it is and how to do it. This book was much more practical for me and would be much easier for a beginner to follow. It was well written and easy to understand. Just the basics of what happens when you meditate and how to do it the simplest way. No weird positions, no chanting, no staring at your belly button. Just the simple and basic understanding and methods of sitting still and not thinking about anything specific. I really responded to the idea of the space between thoughts. That seems to be the concept that I was missing.I really liked the book and I will keep it as a reminder on getting back to the basics of meditation. I am sure I will read it several times in the coming years. I was fortunate enough to pick it up when it was offered for free but it's well work the few dollars that it costs now.If you read this one and want to know more about the how and why of meditation, you will either have to spend a few bucks or get something from the public library. I recommend the library because it's free but that in now way should detract from the quality of this book

Not your usual book on meditation no nonsense
I liked that this book it was easy to read and understand and there wasn’t a whole lot of history of meditation just simple instructions. Really wish I could get my son to try it maybe one day I can convince him I’m sure he thinks it’s full of new age stuff it isn’t. I wish this was around years ago I could have been using it all this time.

Easy to read, easy to practice
The book is a quick read and provides a brief guide to meditation and how you can incorporate meditation into your life without feeling like one of those creeps with dreadlocks who sits around the park not wearing shoes. The instructions are easy to follow and there are also pictures which I found to be useful to practice the various techniques. The personal stories in the book add a touch that most people will be able to relate to in way or another. Some parts of the book did feel a bit out of place, such as a list of celebrities who practice meditation, and there are other parts that you might catch yourself skimming. That being said, other parts of the book you are likely to bookmark and come back as you begin the meditate.Overall, the book is great if you are curious about meditation but don't want to jump into the deep end of craziness it can bring. It is easy to read and is perfect for an airplane trip or lazy afternoon since it isn't too heavy or complex. And if you want to follow through and practice, it's also written in such way that makes it possible to find the info you're looking for without any fuss.

The “Dude” in the title was off-putting, but the book is great!
I don’t consider myself a “Dude” and I don’t even remember being 30 something. I have been meditating for several years now after completing a rather expensive 4 day popular International meditation course. while I certainly have benefitted a great deal from the training and my meditating, I never felt like I really understood what I was doing and subsequently, my practice has withered away over time. Reading this book, which is very straight forward and simple (which my other training, to me was not) has guided me back on track with some of the hints and techniques John has included in his easy going, clearly understood style. I am so glad that I made this purchase and even though it is a short book (I read it in just over an hour), It has has had a very great impact on me. To me, it doesn’t get any better than that!

Review
Well written book, easy to read and follow along. It is nice to read a book about meditation without all the Buddhist, religion filling most of the pages.

Good beginning meditation book.
I have been meditating for quite a number of years and I find it to be very calming. Bought this book for my adult son who wanted to learn how to become calm and meditate. But he didn’t want any “woowoo religious stuff” (his words). So, I looked for a simple “how to” book that would still be helpful. This definitely fits the bill. I enjoyed it and even picked up a tip or two. Recommend it for all levels of meditators.

Good book. As a Buddhist I have meditated on ...
Good book. As a Buddhist I have meditated on and off my entire life. This is a bit different than what I've done but I still find it is effective. The author seems to have a deep understanding of meditation that I can relate to and he has experimented with many different types of meditation. He knows his stuff, and I like how he clearly explains the benefits of meditation. Makes me interested in starting up a everyday practice again. Also, as someone who occassionaly enjoys a beer or two. I am happy to see a meditation teacher say it is okay to enjoy alcohol. Buddhism teaches moderation and I gather that this author understands that. Just because you enjoy alcohol (moderately) doesn't mean you can't be a dedicated meditator. This author is the living embodiment of that belief.

Perfect for beginners who need help getting started with meditation
I've been interested in meditation for the last couple of years but haven't been able to get into a good routine. I imagined that I could just download an app on my phone like Calm or Headspace and get started, but they simply couldn't get me over the hump. When I was looking for strategies online, the blog posts I found were simply targeted at a different audience than myself.Fortunately, I finally found "An Ordinary Dude's Guide to Meditation." It's the introduction to meditation that I always needed. It's a rather short book, which I consider a GOOD thing, because it provides no excuse to delay the practice of meditation. The book is full of metaphors which make it entertaining and easy to understand. I'm finally getting into a daily meditation routine and using many of the tips that John offered and I couldn't be happier.

No nonsense
Personally, I found this a really helpful book. I’m a complete novice and have dipped my toe into mediation before - googling articles and checking out YouTube videos - and each time and found my head spinning a little. This book was v.short, really concise and most importantly to me, clear on how to start a very simple meditation practice - it’s 97 pages long and the chapters specifically on how to mediate run from 35 to 69.If you’re not a beginner / no nonsense type of person you may want to try something more detailed but I really appreciated it.

A Short, to-the-point book to help you meditate
This book is jam-packed with helpful information and advice to get you on the way to meditating. I liked how concise it was because I don’t have much time and it didn’t go on and on and on—just simple, easy instructions and interesting metaphors. I can’t wait to try meditating to relieve my stress and anxiety!

Fantastic little book
Extremely clearly written. Very accessible - like being spoken to by a friend. What he says makes perfect sense. I think I have a much better idea about what meditation really involves now. His approach is not religious, and is very easy to follow. The book is pretty short, but excellent. If you liked this book then you might also like "10% Happier" by Dan Harris.
