The Truth About You: Your Secret to Success

The truth about me
I'm not M.B.'s biggest fan since he parted from Gallup, but I must say I did gain one valuable truth from this book. Usually when people ask me about my strengths (non StrengthsFinder terms), I've always told them the things I'm good at. Like math, public speaking, coding websites etc. But it never occurred to me that although I'm good at those things, I really don't like them. Math leaves me with a headache, coding drains my energy, and public speaking makes my stomach hurt and my asthma act up. The author helped me understand that something is only truly a strength if it gives you energy, not if it takes it away.Being able to then put my skills and talents into the category strength or opportunity because so much easier. Now I know that although I'm good at math, I should avoid using it because it just makes me feel bad. But I love interacting with people one on one, so I'll look for ways to do that more because it gives me energyI recommend this book for anyone who needs to come to the realization that what they are good at isn't always where their strengths lie and where their strengths lie may surprise you.

pure essential ideas
If you've read some other books of Buckingham and need a simple and to the point resume - that's what you really need. All the necessary ideas has been put in place with limited but precise examples. You will see: 1) what is the difference between 'you do it well' and 'it's your strength'; 2) why it's necessary to get your real 'what to do' job description in plain English; 3) what are the 4 main strategies to deal with your weaknesses; and a few other ideas. Just one example - wonder where to find the job of your dream? Do not care - there is no any. You should build it, you always have freedom to fit your current or future job step-by-step based on your strength map.

MB's secrets in a snappy format
This book and dvd is a takeaway format for all that Marcus Buckingham is on about. He talks you through how to identify your strengths, how it can change your life direction and what to look out for that might get in your way. make sure you watch the dvd if only for the excellent story in the background. love the way he encapsulated everything in a simple visual story without any words. i was skeptical about MB but everything he says makes total sense.

a little gimmicky
Marcus makes a good point, but the CD and notebook were unnecessary in my view. The inclusion of them makes reading the book in the container it's in weird and clunky. I really was put off by it.

The Truth About ME
Marcus Buckingham has done much to change my view of what is important and what isn't by showing me how to play to my strengths daily. This short book and film is just one more reason why he is someone I not only listen to but his Strengths based initiative is working for me though I find I have a long road ahead of me. I highly recommend anything by him and it is also a great companion to his other books, but especially his short film "Trombone Player Wanted".

Excellent book. I highly recommend this book for individuals pursuing college or a skilled trade prior to deciding on their major or trade. This book is very thought provoking and Marcus does an exceptional job taking the reader on a very profound journey in pursuing your passions.

Not His Best Work
Here is a great piece advice: Find something in which you have found success, something that you look forward to doing, something that makes time fly by, something that is incredibly easy for you to focus on and something that fulfills a need of yours... and then do it. Find ways to do it in your job, no matter what your job is. Find ways to incorporate that into your relationships, your free time, anywhere and everywhere. This is Marcus Buckingham's advice in "The Truth about You". This is not new advice, but it is concise and timely for nearly everyone.I work with so many college and young career friends of mine who are constantly trying to figure out what the heck they should be doing with life. Buckingham provides some good help in "Now, Discover Your Strengths" and this book and others of his have been helpful for some of my friends and even personally."The Truth about You" is a book in the same vein, minus the testing component of the Strength Finder. But the easiest way to say it is it is dumbed-down. It is simplified. The "book" has three components. A 24-minute DVD, a 110 page book, and a memo pad to use as a tool to take notes on daily moments where you find your strengths and your weaknesses. The book uses a large font, lots of blank pages and too much empty space on each page. I read it in one setting in about 60 minutes in depth. The DVD is really well done and Buckingham is fun to listen to. Yet he is pretty much reading the book word for word in a dramatic, motivational-presentation style voice. The memo pad is a good idea, it takes steps to really engage a whole new level of learning that simple reading cannot. Yet, instead of a spiral notepad, they could have included a 3x5 card to slip in your wallet or purse instead.I also have to say that I didn't like the tone Buckingham uses in this book. Cocky is the word I think of. With phrases like, "[in your hands right now] you're holding that answers to these questions", and "[this is...] the best advice you will ever get". Maybe in order to make the book concise he chose to speak in absolutes on every single page. He offers little support or solid reasoning for most of his claims in this book; this is a departure from his previous work.Unfortunately the book doesn't seem to introduce much new material and is over-packaged. It tried to make up for it by having a DVD and hip formatting, but ultimately lacks quality content. As you can tell I was disappointed by this book. I really like his other books, but this is a step in the wrong direction. It would be a good primer for someone who is new to the idea of personal strengths or who has spent little time in personal professional development.

Quick, easy, and very thought provoking
If you're looking for a book to help get you out of a rut, this is it. It is a how to on how to work in your strengths - things that energize and fulfill you, rather than working in your weaknesses - things that suck the life out of you.

Rubbish!
Having enjoyed his previous books, I was looking forward to absorbing everything new that MB had to tell me. Sadly, I find I have a new strength. I'm gullible. MB also has a new strength - how to exploit the gullible and get them to pay good money for an extract of his previous work, plus - wait for it, wait for it - a blank notebook. Yep - what could have been mine for a few pennies has cost me pounds. I feel quite sick, but if I can save just one of you from buying this piffle, then my work here is done. Please note, I continue to enjoy his previous works. Unfortunately, I have to give one star just to get off this blessed page!!!
