Lots of fun, but not for everyone
I bought this thing because, like a good percentage of bassists who are looking at this thing, I'm a huge Justin Chancellor (Tool's bassist) fan. This pedal will let you do all the crazy pitch bending and harmonizing you hear in their music and more. The only bad thing I have to say is that it's rather expensive. Of course, most other octave effects are just as expensive if not more so.Tracking:The pedal tracks really well. I use the classic mode most of the time and it tracks 2 & 3 note chords reasonably well as long as pitches aren't too close together, though it will produce some digital artifacts that will either be cool or annoying, depending on your preferences. Chord mode works ridiculously well, but introduces a very slight delay between your playing and the output signal. Noticeable when playing at home, less so in a band situation. I should also note that you can use the pitch shifts to detune your bass in a pinch: it works better than I thought. For example, I used the 2nd-down to go from drop-D to drop-C to play along with some Chevelle at home, and the change in sound quality wasn't actually that noticeable. It will be more noticeable if you're dropping a 4th or more, though.Tone:Being a digital pedal that basically copies/replaces your signal to whatever pitch you've selected, the output is very clean and accurate, but also has a pretty cold and digital tone. This is more noticeable at extreme pitches, like one octave or more. An overdrive/distortion/fuzz does wonders at hiding that, though. And sometimes, that tone is what you want; after all, Tool makes good use of those qualities. But if you're looking for something like a bass octave pedal, look elsewhere. I have MXR's analog bass octave deluxe, and it produces a much better-sounding bass octave than the Whammy does, but that's because it isn't digitally copying the signal: it's making its own kind of sound. And that's all it does, despite only costing a bit less than the Whammy.Features:Basically, this thing is just like the normal Whammy, just with a few different pitch options. There are plenty of awesome harmony/pitch bend modes, the only trick is finding ways to use them. I use the harmony modes the most, particularly the 5th-Octave mode, as the octave mode works really well with an overdrive or distortion with it. The detune modes are nice and can fill in for a chorus-like effect you can control with the pedal. They also lend some practicality to an otherwise crazy pedal.Quality:Seems sturdy as a rock. I'd be careful trying to operate the rotary switch with your foot, though. It would be easy to bend it. Otherwise, be sure to read the manual to learn how to calibrate the pedal. Mine worked fine out of the box, but you may need to adjust it eventually.Overall, I'm very happy with my toy and it was worth the money. Just realize that, unlike an overdrive or wah, it may indeed end up being more of a toy than a practical effect that you use a lot. You can get some good, practical sounds out of the octave harmonies (think like a bass octave pedal) and the detune effects though. And with a little work, you could work this into your music.

The best
Very nice pedal for bass guitar, excellent sound and a lot of things to experiment with this thing. The only problem was that came to me with the knob tune selector, a little bit broken. I didn't know if this happened on the store or in the delivery in the USA or here at my country, but it wasn't a big problem.

Very solid update to a classic
Very well made and the chord options are excellent, a good way to simulate an 8 string bass, I use it to get the sound of Jeff Ament on the Pearl Jam song Jeremy. Dive bomb function is pretty average, could benefit from a more gradual sweep.

Amazing pedal
Wouldn't have bought it if I wasn't into tool. It's an amazing piece of gear.

but I've been very happy with it
As another reviewer said, fans of Tool bassist Justin Chancellor will find this pedal to be exactly what they're looking for! I've also used it for guitar (also a big RATM fan), and it works very well for that, too. Admittedly, I'm just a basement player, so I can't say how rugged this would be in more rigorous setting, but I've been very happy with it.

Fun to use
If you're a tool fan, you'll love this. No use for it apart from playing some tool stuff, your band mates probably won't like you using this haha

Amazing product! (but may need compression)
This pedal opens the door to a whole new realm of possibilities. Ive been playing bass for 15 + years and this has made practice fresh again as I can explore a whole new unique set of abilities to my style. The reason that i gave it 4 stars is because there is a drop in volume when shifting down and an increase when shifting up. I purchased an Empress Compressor and it sounds great with that. Compression or not, I'm very happy with this purchase.

Great effect pedal for bass
This is a great pedal for bass. It really sounds good. It's a bit pricey and it's not always on, but it's really cool. I reccomend it if you can afford it. If not, get one later when you can afford one.

Tolles Gerät, schlechte Verpackung
Super Gerät! Macht genau das, was es soll.Hatte schon die vorherige Version. Deutliche Verbess'dererung!

Great addition to your FX board
I also have the original red guitar whammy, which is brilliant but unreliable. This is definitely part of it's charm but also a nightmare when you want it to behave itself so I've consigned it to studio use only and bought this as a 'safe' live tool. I'm pleased to say that this one tracks really well. The new chord mode is generally good, great to have that option, and sounds very guitar-like with a relatively subtle amount of reverb added. In 'classic' mode chords still break up but not in quite as pleasingingly 'anarchic' a way, it definitely feels less aggressive. Overall though I think this is great.I'm intrigued by the possibilites of having a midi input but haven't used that yet. I'll update the review when I get round to it.
