Brilliant Reliable Drill
The media could not be loaded. Great powerful drill with plenty of functions normally present on pricier models. One such function which is not mentioned anywhere in the description, or even the instructions, is the variable speed dial which is incredibly useful. Especially with the power this has, so you can dial it right down so that you don't take chunks of wall out when starting to drill into masonry and then dial it up once started giving a nice clean finish. Or for mixing with a paddle mixer you can get the speed just right and can even lock it on. Nice and easy to swap between modes too.I have a battery SDS drill I use regularly but this just has much more power, great for bigger jobs like ripping out old tiles or knocking up plaster. So far it's holding up really well despite quite a few punishing jobs. The case is also pretty decent and the chuck that's included is nice and heavy duty, bits are fine too but quite short.Overall a fantastic dependable and versatile drill and excellent value too.

Versatile DIY rotary hammer drill
A few months ago I bought an expensive breaker for a heavy duty project I'm on with; and I already have a cordless DeWalt drill for general work; so it was good to find this Amtech drill that does both jobs - a bit like a jack-of-all-trades rather than a king of one.Firstly its 240v mains corded so has limitations - but the 2.4 metre rugged outdoor cable is fine.Secondly it is not brushless (pros and cons) but the comprehensive instruction manual shows you how to replace the carbon brushes when that time comes. At just under 2.6kg it is a lot lighter than my Kango, but heavier than my DeWalt.1250 rpm and 650 watts makes it reasonably powerful for most DIY jobs.Comes in a decent case with 3 SDS drill bits, depth gauge and separate chuck head (photo 5) for when you want to use non-SDS drill bits. It does not come with any chisel bits so unless you got them with another breaker you will have to purchase one/some.Good adjustable front handle so most people will find a comfortable position.3 way switch (photo 4) to choose drill/hammer/roto-stop percussion; forward/reverse selector and lock button all easy to operate.Overall I think this is a good middle-of-the-road piece of kit; but then the icing on the cake is that it comes with a 2 year warranty which I think is commendable for a DIY piece of kit in this price bracket.

Good DIY SDS Drill
The media could not be loaded. As you can see in my video, Amtech's SDS drill is well made. The manufacturer has paid particular attention to the cable, which is a generous 2.4m long and very rugged, suitable for outdoor work. The drill is light for this category, only 2.58kg.The drill is supplied in a tool case, itself very sturdy, made from moulded plastic (polypropylene?) and in addition to the drill contains three SDS drills, a hole depth gauge and a 13mm keyed chuck. Why oh why most manufacturers supply a chuck I do not know - with the weight of an SDS drill you can easily break thin drill bits and how many people need to try? Virtually everyone, as a first purchase, would have a power drill (and probably the next a cordless power drill), so we already have the right tool for regular straight shank drill bits.Unfortunately, although the box says the content includes chisel bits, there are none provided. With chisel bits you can set the drill on "hammer only" (no rotation) and perform tough tasks such as splitting concrete and chasing-out electric cable channels in walls. What does SDS actually mean? Well, there are four versions: SDS, SDS Quick, SDS+ and SDS Max. All have fluted shaft designs such that a traditional chuck is not required - just insert the bit and twist to secure it. SDS is German (coined by Bosch): Steck (insert), Dreh (twist), Sitzt (sits). Internationally it is translated in English as "Special Direct System" or "Slotted Drive Shaft". SDS guarantees the bit will not slip in the chuck and yields high torque, so basically SDS means high performance compared to regular drills and is designed to deliver a powerful hammer action. SDS and SDS+ are interchangeable, both will work with this drill. The tool has a two year warranty. It has a brushed motor but unfortunately you cannot replace the brushes yourself, the drill has to go to an authorised agent for such a simple task. There is also no access to to the gearbox for a grease top-up. These are the two items most likely to wear so it is a pity that you cannot apply any maintenance yourself.Video: On a PC, left mouse click the maximise symbol, bottom right corner, to view the video full-screen. For the odd DIY task
Simple enough to set up, alter the modes and has proven perfect for the odd DIY task, but the overall feel of the drill within hand & in use, raises concerns about it managing prolonged use.

Do not buy!
1, This drill blew up on me on its first use! Whilst drilling, it started to spark and flames grew out of the back followed by more sparks then acrid smoke. I would 0% recommend this drill.2, after contacting Amazon, it’s a 3rd party seller and can only be returned and then refunded not directly replaced. But let’s be honest, a drill blowing up in your face is a bigger worry than getting the refund. Just avoid!1 star is too many!
