An Outstanding, Deep Read
The Essence of Buddhism marks for an outstanding, deep read. The author is able to merge various forms of Buddhism together and to compare their dimensions. He explains the quite well-understood explanation of the emptiness, which was a bit like turning on a light within. Existence is transient and constantly in motion without form or substance formed and taken shape by our mental precepts. It is merely the result of this conscious movement that we exist. Whereas Hinduism asserts the existence of the atman, or primordial soul, Buddhism refers to the anatman, or in the illusion of the ego-self as it occurs from the formation mental precepts and concepts. The truth as we sit in meditation and become nearer to a state of samadhi is the Buddha-nature, in the abode of purity, light and selflessness. In the state of Nirvana, emptiness and bliss exist harmoniously, like a dance because the bliss of nirvana is not voidness, but in fact luciditiy, as well as purity.

Good practical book on basic practices of Buddhism with overview ...
Good practical book on basic practices of Buddhism with overview of relationship among various strains of Buddhism and their historical development. I especially liked the descriptions of the practice of Mahamudra toward the end of the book. Torpor/distraction, awareness/relaxation. Interesting. I have given copies of this book to friends interested in Buddhism.

Not an introduction, but a great overview
An outstanding summary of Tibetan Buddhism. You may not relate to all of it right away, but as you enter deeper into a study of Tibetan Buddhism, this book will make the outlines of the subject clearer. A great book. Simple and clear.

The "Essence of Buddhism" made clear
The clearest explanation of Buddhism's underpinnings I have read. I have read a lot over the years. This book made me realize how little my grasp was of the basics. For me a must read.

Outstanding
I run a small inter-faith meditation center where I am the principal teacher. I have used this book as a text book, really, for my Saturday morning class. It's very accessible without being the least bit simplistic. I return to it again and again. I simply wouldn't be without it.

the essence of buddhism
this is a very good book. i've read many introductions to buddhism in relation to my practice and my teaching of buddhist psychology. at one level, this book is excellent as a beginner's introduction to an overview of the buddhist path and meditation practice. at another level, it is an advanced comprehensive but terse guide to a multitude of perspectives on the path and practice.
