Lonely Planet Australia (Country Guide)

Provides a good overview
This brick-of-a-book could double as a doorstop, so it's not the guide you'll casually toss in your bag to carry around for the day. But then, it's covering an entire country, one that is large and with a lot to see.And it does a decent job of conveying information about that country. Using small type over nearly 1100 pages, it crams info on history, transportation, eats, wineries, nature, entertainment, lodging. . .if you are going to use only one guide book (something I don't recommend, ever) this one will give you a fine overview. I think they do an especially good job describing ways to get around. Contact info, including URLs, make it easy to find out more about whatever piques your curiosity. But there are some problems. The information could be better organized. Maps are often nowhere near the text for the area about which you are reading. Many maps and points of interest come after the text; it would be much better if they came before. There is one wimpy pull-out map of Sydney in the back. It could be more detailed and maps of other cities would also be welcome.

Great resource
While some people complaint that lonely planet isnt what it used to be, this was a great resource to help in Australia and my girlfriend and I used it quite a bit! It may be a bit heavy to travel with but it was definitely useful and we felt we got to see much of what Sydney and Melbourne has to offer.

Great book, always love lonely planet
Great book, always love lonely planet. However, and the reason I gave it 4 stars, it is VERY heavy for a travel book (2 & 3/4 lbs!) and thick (almost 2" thick). It takes up a lot of real estate in my carry on. Also, I intentionally got the newest published book I could find (this is 2017) whoever there are some references in it from 2015 as the most current info on Melbourne and Sydney. That's a little disappointing.

Good book
I’m used to the way Rick Steves writes travel books, so this was obviously a different author and the layout was very different. It did offer good information and have nice maps. Good book overall.

The Book
What Footprint does with their South America guide, Lonely Planet does with Australia. There's no better book on Oz out there, period.

Too Big and Bulky!
Unless you plan on touring every square inch of Australia, I can't recommend this book. It's too big, bulky and the travel information is too general and limited. Strongly recommend buying one of LP's regional Australia's travel books in lieu of this heavy paperweight. I bought an older LP Queensland guidebook which was heaps more compact yet still had much more detailed travel info and tips than this.

Good content but Hyperlinks from contents pages do not function when using Mac Pro..very irritating
Lonely Planet always has excellent content but, this type and size of publication really needs all links to work properlyWhen viewing on Mac Pro, the links shown in the table of contents and sub tables do not function correctly.. instead of going to the section indicated, they show dictionary definition of word(s) highlighted. This does not happen with other KIndle publications on the same laptop and does not happen when using this same book on ipad or iphone

Concise and thorough guide book. Although maybe a little too large if only planning a small trip i.e. east/west coast Lonely Planet books may be more suitable.
