Exceeds my expectations
Fantastic device. Everything working beautifully. Great picture and sound quality, PVR and timeshift recording (even two timeshift types) on a USB Stick or external HDD flawless, remote controller responsive, dual tuners to record two different channels or watch and record simultaneously, nice other features like favourite channels lists and so on. The only small issue is that the EPG doesn't show programmes on several channels at the same time. Doesn't bother me, the EPG still is usable enough. Coincidentally, I've bought several August devices during several years. Originally mainly because they are so affordable. No problems ever, always happy with them. It is difficult to understand why this August DVB482 gets quite many negative reviews. Maybe people just don't understand how to operate this kind of boxes? (Operating is very simple, especially if you are familiar with TV tuner and recorder devices.) Maybe people expect too much? This device does not wash your laundry, make your dinner or write your emails. It just beautifully shows and records TV programmes (and plays multimedia files from your USB device). Thank you, August.

For sub £50 it's great little DVR but don't expect the world.
Firstly let me start by saying I'm big on relativity and what I mean by that is if you buy this sub £50 DVR and expect Apple or TiVO standard viewing experiences you will be sorely disappointed but if you bear in mind this is a sub £50 device you'll be delighted. We've been a Virgin customer for years but the price was going up to literally £180 a month which is way over priced so we cancelled Virgin but I still like to be able to record stuff, hence getting this box. I knew this device was small but wow when it arrived it was actually smaller than I even thought - which is great. It takes up little space. It also includes an HDMI cable which was a nice touch as I've bought £200+ DVD players before that don't come with a cable. It comes with everything you need to get started, including batteries. As I say, if you remember it's sub £50 then it's a delightful device but it has some flaws: - While recording you can't view the EPG or change channels - you're stuck. - Recordings, instead of getting named by their title, get named by the TV channel so instead of The Young Ones it will be BBC which is annoying. - The UI looks like it's from the early 90s. - While it recording it flashes a recording symbol on the top right throughout which really annoys me. It also has some good points: - Easy to use. - Plug in USB drive and record - recordings are unencrypted and h.264 and I believe it supports h.265 too. I've plugged in a 2TB external hard drive and it's working perfectly. - The remote can learn your TV on/off and volume +/1 so you can just use the one remote for general usage. If I'd paid £200 or even £150 I'd probably be greatly dissapointed but for £50 - it does the job and saving me £180 a month on Virgin so I can't complain. I would definitely recommend this little device for this price point.

Good Value
For the price paid this is a really good item. You really need to read the full instruction manual rather than the quick set up in order to get the full benefit but once you have it proves to be very good value.

Cheap and cheerful kit to record freeview, but clunky to use - August DVB482
The good bits: Cheap, Records freeview programs effectively to USB stick Playback and quality of recording is fine The less good: Can only do one thing at a time - if you are recording, you can't view anything else and can only record one program at a time. The EPG rendition is clunky - when scrolling through channels the view is always whichever channel your cursor is currently on, unlike most TVs. There is no "page up/down" so scrolling to higher channel numbers takes a while. For each channel you land on, the upcoming programs are in a vertical column, so again a lot of scrolling. When the list gets to midnight, it can't scroll into the next day - you have to use the "next day" button. If you hit the "info" button during playback, the play stops and you have to explicitly restart it. It would not recognise my Sonnics 500GB external hard drive. (Can't be sure if this is an August issue or a Sonnics one.) Playback of other multimedia files uses a fairly crude interface and the file types are limited to the most common only. As a one off issue, my unit rattled on receipt and I found a baffle plate had come loose inside, but it was easy to reaffix. I suggest use this for recording only and view the usual channels through a TV's built in freeview functions if you have them.

Could have, should have but did not work
The marketing blurb sold this to me and if it was true then this product should have been 5 ***** every day. Sadly, the marking blurb is all hype and no substance. Let me say at this point that I am a genuine user of the product, who has thoroughly tested its capabilities, including its support process. So lets get to it. Good: Ease of installation, picture quality, remote control, epg layout. Bad: Channel download (which falls well short of other products tested), epg population (only partial population and expect some programs to disappear from view as you select them), recording selections (unable to select a series. Unable to select back to back programs, some programs recorded incorrectly) Ugly: Support provided with substantial information and evidence of issues, but insisted on informing me that unit would not work if connected to a TV with a satellite connection?????? No firmware site is available and no firmware updates are provided. So in a nutshell this product looks good on paper but does not cut the mustard in the real word. Buyer beware.

Works as a basic recorder but cannot record one channel while watching another
I bought the August DVB482 hoping to record one channel while watching another, as the product description implied. In practice, this is not possible unless both channels are on the same Freeview multiplex, which is a major limitation not made clear before purchase. The USB functionality works fine — I tested it with a Sandisk USB flash drive and it was recognised immediately. The box is fine for recording channels and watching channels in the same group (for example, recording BBC One while watching BBC Two, or recording ITV while watching ITV2/3/4). However, trying to record ITV and watch Channel 4, or any channels on different multiplexes, does not work, which makes it far less flexible than expected. Overall, the box works as a basic recorder but does not meet the expectations of a true dual-tuner PVR. Pros: • Simple setup • Recognises USB drives quickly • Freeview channels work reliably Cons: • Cannot record one channel and watch another on different multiplexes • Misleading product description regarding “dual tuner” capability • Limited for anyone wanting full PVR functionality Good for basic recording of channels within the same group, but not suitable if you want to watch one channel while recording another independently.

Mine doesn’t work!
Okay for recording manually, but on timer recording, PVR switches on, but doesn’t record. All settings are correct, time and region, but no amount of fiddling will cure the problem. If flash drive was faulty, PVR would not record anything onto it in manual mode.
