When the original Visible Learning ® was published in 2008, it instantly became a publishing sensation. Interest in the book was unparalleled; it sold out in days and was described by the TES as revealing "teaching’s Holy Grail". Now John Hattie returns to this ground-breaking work. The research underlying this book is now informed by more than 2,100 meta-analyses (more than double that of the original), drawn from more than 130,000 studies, and has involved more than 400 million students from all around the world. But this is more than just a new edition. This book is a sequel that highlights the major story, taking in the big picture to reflect on the implementation in schools of Visible Learning, how it has been understood – and at times misunderstood – and what future directions research should take. Visible Learning: The Sequel reiterates the author’s desire to move beyond claiming what works to what works best by asking crucial questions such as: Why is the current grammar of schooling so embedded in so many classrooms, and can we improve it? Why is the learning curve for teachers after the first few years so flat? How can we develop teacher mind-frames to focus more on learning and listening? How can we incorporate research evidence as part of the discussions within schools? Areas covered include: The evidence base and reactions to Visible Learning The Visible Learning model The intentional alignment of learning and teaching strategies The influence of home, students, teachers, classrooms, schools, learning, and curriculum on achievement The impact of technology Building upon the success of the original, this highly anticipated sequel expands Hattie’s model of teaching and learning based on evidence of impact and is essential reading for anyone involved in the field of education either as a researcher, teacher, student, school leader, teacher trainer, or policy maker. Review: This is the update I have been waiting for - While you can visit the Meta-X website for a quick check on effects and rankings, this book takes a much deeper dive than the first publication and it contains additional effects that are contemporary and timely. Effects on emotional intelligence, worked examples, autism and many more provide additional evidence about enhancing the Visible Learning process. Review: Excellent resource - This is a great resource that effectively summarizes the evidence. It's actionable and valuable for anyone involved in schooling. The key messages helped me think about the work that I do and how I want to shape the experiences that our teachers and students have in schools.

The sequel
It has a lot of data and the ‘why’ to start off the book. Then it gets into the strategies around engagement and the effect size that strategy should have on student growth. Overall, great information and it adds more tricks to the toolbox!

Good update
Like the readability and format of the original, but to avoid misuse of data it was necessary.

Impact
The sequel is more nuanced than the first. Everything is embedded with the idea of impact.

Fascinating research
Great follow up to the original research. Hattie speaks to the various criticisms of the original work and expands his research into what works in education.

Brillante

A must read!
In education, not acceptable to ‘do anything’ - make sure to work with those elements providing the greatest impact and return. Hattie’s research and implementation guidelines are a must read for all educators!

Only for those versed in statistics
There is a wealth of information in this book, but unless you have studied statistics you can't get at it beyond the most superficial reading. It needs a "Stats for Flatfeet" (or equivalent) chapter at the beginning, where Hattie abseils down from the lofty heights and simply explains how the diagrams and tables work. We're not proud: spell it out in very short words and we'll be grateful. (Maybe someone more familiar with the humbler lower slopes of the mountain would do it better.) A free "Guide to Visible Learning" pdf is available from the Routledge website, but it doesn't explain the diagrams either. As a working teacher, I really want to learn how to do my job better. I want to know the research findings that recommendations are based on. But as a working teacher, I have limited time - and patience - with indigestible wodges of information. I need a way in.
