I ordered these largely out of curiosity. I’ve eaten in a couple of Tibetan restaurants in the area, but I’d never seen or heard of chhurpi before encountering across these here. Wikipedia has an interesting and useful article on the varieties, production, and uses of chhurpi, but nothing replaces first-hand experience. So what’s it like? First, it’s the hardest cheese I’ve ever encountered. Compared to this, a five year old aged Edam is cream cheese. It looks like pieces of glazed pottery, and in the mouth, feels much the same. It’s impossible to chew right out of the package, and twenty minutes of sucking on it will slightly soften the surface to the point that you can almost taste it. I’m still not sure if I like it, or what it even tastes like, but I’ve got a whole package to go through to get a better idea. After all, over 3 million Tibetans like it, and they make some pretty tasty food.

I can't say that I dislike this stuff. As it really has next to no flavor. Very, very hard blocks of plasticky feeling product. Put one in your mouth and suck on it for what seems like an eternity, and it slowly dissolves...very slowly... I guess I can understand the gum chewing comparison, as it gives your mouth something to do. As I said before, they really have almost zero flavor, which I found odd after reading previous reviews. Maybe I got a bad batch?

I guess you have to be from Nepal to really appreciate this. If you read the product description, you can have some realistic expectations. Many of the Reviews that are negative are from people who didn't really know what to expect. The problem is that it says that it's a gum replacement. So some people expect a chewy soft type of gum. But that's not what it is. Even though it's made out of yak milk, it's as hard as a rock. They advise you to soak it in warm water for about 13 minutes if you want to soften it up before putting it in your mouth. They also write the following in the description which is quite useful. I hope my photos are helpful. "Men must work the end of the Chhurpi Nut for hours, softening it with mouths before small parts of it can be slowly scraped off." So he should buy this? If you want to chew on something that is quite hard and it's slowly disintegrate so over the course of 1 hour, and this will be the thing for you. It has a mild taste of milk which tastes a bit like a cheese.
