Radio City

Modified from 4 to 5 Stars
Giving it 4 stars because I love Alex Chilton but it's closer to 3 stars objectively. I read a few comments that Radio City was in its own way the equal of #1 Record. I am here to tell you it's not even close- Radio City, though it certainly has a few catchy tunes, still has that special Big Star sound, that sensitive and clear guitar work, those great vocals- it still pales in comparison to #1 Record. And yes, I miss Chris Bell though apparently he did help write a good deal of songs on Radio city. "You Get What You Deserve", "Back of a Car" & "September Gurls" are the clear winners on the album, all catchy and at this point we call them "classics". It's a pity the rest of the songs don't grab me like these. Perhaps over time the album will grow on me, we'll see.Well, I'm checking in again, about 6 months later and am delighted to say this album really has grown on me. Been listening to it every day in the car. I'm giving it the full 5 stars especially due to "she's a Mover" and "Daisy Glaze" wow those are simply sublime.

Children by the Million Sing for Radio City
It comes as no shock that Radio City is a great album. I was glad to finally see it released on it's own. My one complaint would be that I never was able to find out if this version was newly remastered. I did some research but never came up with a definitive answer. I thought with the new Mike Mills liner notes, it was going to be a brand new release with newly remastered sound. The album sounds great but it would have been nice to know if I was getting a newly remastered album or if a previous remaster was used. Anyway, album is still amazing!

Another unknown classic...
I'll admit that I didn't learn of Big Star until after viewing the documentary on their career. I first heard of them as "the band that wrote the theme song to That 70's Show". I decided to pick up their first album and was blown away. It's still completely baffling how this band slipped through the cracks of the early seventies? The songwriting and musicianship is absolutely amazing and there's not any half hearted material or filler. Radio City, their sophmore effort is no exception. Even without the input of guitarist Chris Bell the band mines the well of whatever gift was given to them in their abilities. I don't do song by song reviews because it's really all self interpretation anyways right? I'd recommend picking up their first album #1 Record first then get this one to help complete the bigger picture.*****

Great record. It's a shame they weren't big stars when they were around
Great record despite the absence of co founder Chris Bell. Plenty of Alex Chilton is never a bad thing. Great songs all in all and stands proudly next to #1 record and 3rd. Highly recommended.

Four Stars
Good second effort from the band. Not qiood as their debut, but close.
