Should this be mixed with anything because it did nothing to my hair except completely dry it out.

All tints should be mixed with creme peroxide. Peroxide comes in different strengths 3%, 6%, 9%, 12%. With cool cover tint it's best to use 6 or 9% peroxide. Inside the box there are instructions telling you the ratio to mix the tint to peroxide, eg, 50ml tint to 100ml peroxide, mix together to form a cream then apply to roots first then rest of hair. Tints do dry hair so it's best to leave on hair for exact time required+no more. Conditioning is important for aftercare, so you should always use a good conditioner. I recommend L'Oréal elvive for coloured hair, the shampoo and conditioner are very good. It's a bit like chemistry you mix tint+peroxide together, that's what they use in salons and box dyes, never use tint on its own+read the instructions carefully. It gets better with practice.
