Q: Why did the one I have completely fail while i was midstream in the middle of the Connecticut river

The first wading staff that I picked was the 3 section type, with a bungee cord. It may work for a pond, a gravel bottom, knee deep pond, but for river wading, serious river wading, stay away from the folding, sectional type of staffs. I learned the hard way, trying to cross a river and thinking that I could rely on my staff. They will pull apart if it is a soft bottom, they stick and separate when you try to remove them. For gentle wading, knee deep, calm water, wading with a group, go with the sectional staff. Mine is hanging in my storage unit for a few years.

Q: What's the diameter of these staffs? Are they all the same diameter?

This is a horrible product that did not work out of the box which was very poor all in in it self. Save the trouble and buy a folstaff or Simms. You do not want to trust your balance to this cheap piece of junk. I took it to the dump.
