Good, underrated, film, especially Emily Blunt and Susan Sarandon’s performances
Good, underrated, film, should be better known. It has good performances from two leading actresses, Susan Sarandon (brilliant in 'Thelma & Louise', good in 'The Rocky Horror Picture Show' and other films) but perhaps especially Emily Blunt (brilliant in ‘the Devil Wears Prada’, good in ‘The Jane Austen Book Club’ and other films). The plot involves a mystery, but is done well enough still to be interesting and enjoyable on second viewing, even when we already know the solution. This film was not particularly successful commercially, not helped by the unmemorable title ‘Irresistible’, which does not relate much to the plot. It also does not neatly fall into any particular genre, which often makes films more interesting, but also harder to market to any particular audience.Although set in Australia, the story takes place in an upper middle class suburb not much different from upper middle class suburbs in other countries. Do not expect koalas, aborigines or distinctive Australian landscapes. At the beginning of the story, Susan Sarandon’s character is living a normal, comfortable life as a suburban wife and mother. However, she begins to notice strange, unsettling and even dangerous things happen around her home. There is no apparent explanation unless someone is getting into and out of her house unseen, but with no sign of break-in.She begins to suspect that Emily Blunt’s character, who lives nearby, is behind it, but has no idea how or why. Or is Ms Sarandon’s character going mad? While this is not primarily a thriller, by the end she is in serious danger and there is dramatic action. There is a resolution and explanation, but it is not the usual ‘mystery solved, bad characters caught, case closed’ end of a conventional thriller or detective story. The real mystery is more 'Why?' than 'Who?' or 'How?'. Its resolution turns out to be to do with emotions about something that happened years ago. I cannot explain that more without giving too much away.American actress Susan Sarandon’s character is meant to be Australian but we are told the character had spent years in the USA. That is presumably to cover for the fact that Ms Sarandon could not do an Australian accent and sounds American throughout. However, that does not spoil enjoyment of the film.As I quite often find myself saying in reviews, if Amazon star ratings allowed it I would give this 4 stars plus. As they do not, four stars is nearest.

FATAL ATTRACTION!!!!!!
Hi Everyone,I recently purchased "Irresistible" on DVD. All I can say is what fine acting. Susan Sarandon and Sam Neill are a knockout as is the enicing young lady who plays the man eater!!!!!A good storyline with a twist that keeps you glued to your seat.In a nutshell its about a school teacher played by Susan Sarandon whose married to Architect Sam Neill and their lives are hectic. They have an adorable little girl to boot.Susan has recently been bereaved in the film and is coping with the loss of her beloved Mother and coming to terms without having her in her life any more. Its an emotional rollercoaster. Susan is also an artist in her own time who does beautiful illustrations - bit like you'd expect to see in the upmarket magazine called "The Lady!".Strange things happen at first. The iron is left steaming away on iron board and Susan is sure she switched off. Then there are strange noises from the kitchen larder and upstairs and her cute daughter swears to her Mother that there is someone else in the house. Susan investigates and puts it down to her state of mind as as you'd expect she's feeling rather fragile in her emotional outlook.Eventually the young temptress takes over and ingratiates herself into Susan's life and makes a play at stealing all what she holds so dear in her life - including her husband, daughter and Susan goes to her Father for advice who also feels she needs time out from work to deal with the situation. The seducer of a young girl also attempts to injure Susan at every twist and turn and even befriends her and copies her dress style and seduces her husband late in the office on night(or you might well say she is on threshold of doing this when something happens)!!!!I won't spoil the ending for you but suffice to say there is a very valid reason why the young woman is seeking revenge on Susan and you'll be left wondering whether the young lady has done the right/wrong way of doing things or not!!!!Excellent film and I strongly recommend seeing!!!!!!! ***** I give this 5 star without shadow of a doubt. If there are little ones around you may wish to shield them from the swarm of bees and one little intimate encounter when it gets to office part-but other than this - its a very watchable film!!!!!

Sarandon and Blunt need to do more films together!
First off, I absolutely love Susan Sarandon and Emily Blunt, so them being in a film together got me very excited; I then read the back copy and it sounded like the kind of psychological suspense shenanigan Im into, so I got it in my basket quick! The general premise (not giving anything away I hope) is that Sarandon and Neill are in a slightly bland marriage, and when Sarandon feels Neills assistant (Blunt) starts to get a little too "interested" in him/ them, it all goes a bit pete tong; specifically along the lines of Sarandon thinking Blunt is stalking them/out to get her, and everyone else thinking Sarandon is losing it/stalking Blunt... Its a slightly different take on the tried and tested "obsessed third party making everyone think the heroine is mental" plot, but makes for a very watchable, if slightly slow to get moving, film. For me, the first maybe half hour was a bit dull - saved only by the fantastic character portrayals of the three stars - but as the pace picks up it gets REALLY good. I flipped between wondering whether Sarandon was actually a bit batscat, or Blunt was the best villain since dick dastardly, or somewhere between the two - but I did NOT guess where it was all heading to.It seems too to have been one of the very rare instances in recent cinema where the bulk of the budget was spent on hiring the best actors and a decent crew instead of technology and location. All in all a thoroughly enjoyable film whether you're a fan of one or more of the stars, or of psych-thrillers - dropping a star for me only because in parts it was a little too slow, the ending a little hurried, and with better editing couldve been amazing
