Smell is very strong: they also sell a non-scented mini cord for non-aggressive chewers
The citrus smell is very strong. I already knew this from buying the citrus scented regular-sized clear plastic cord protector years ago at a local pet store. I did not realize that this company also sells the mini cord as unscented until now, so I'm returning this for the non-scented version as I have not had problems with any cat chewing cords but I am planning to use a protector on all my cords for safety anyway; these will also keep cords on the floor cleaner- these protectors have a smooth surface which can be wiped down easier than a textured electric cord. From what I remember of the full-size cords, this citrus smell is lasting which may help people protect their pets and electric cords. the citrus scent could be annoying if its used on cords in close proximity to people but probably is an added deterent to pet chewing. The non-scented version: 'PetCords Mini 6ft Dog and Cat Cord Protector-Protects Your Pets from Chewing Through Charging Cables. Fits- iPhone, Android and Other USB Cables, Unscented, Odorless'.

Smell goes away after 3-4 days; it works great!!
This product has been a life-saver - for my cords at least! All the reviews talking about how much it smells are just ridiculous. Yes, it smells - for the first 3-4 days at most! I open mine up and just put it in the dining room (which we don't use much) for a few days and then it's fine! I bought one not only for my computer, but for my mom's as well. My mom is SUPER sensitive to smells, they will definitely make her sick or give her a headache. But since I had let it air out a few days before putting it on her laptop cord, it didn't bother her one bit!It works great - even if it doesn't repel the cats, it still keeps them from damaging the cord. I have 4 cats who are all prone to chew cords. Only one will occasionally nibble on the critter cord, but she doesn't do it for long and has never chewed through. I've had mine for a year now and it's still working great - with NO smell whatsoever at this point.

Very Effective!!
Let's get this out of the way now, YES, these protectors have a very very strong smell to them when you first open these (the smell is what obviously helps deter pets). HOWEVER, the smell goes away very quickly. I have two cats and a small apartment and I use these cord protectors all over the place. The cord smell is almost overpowering right out of the box, but the smell quickly dissipates in a couple days and after about a week you probably won't notice it, and after 2 weeks (tops), the scent will be completely gone. If you put the cord protector right up to your nose and sniff it the strong scent will still be there (which means it'll continue to deter your pets), but the scent won't be wafting around your home. The scent and taste of these protectors is really what keeps your pets away from your cables and these have been 100% effective for me. My cats won't go near the stuff. My only slight complaint is the price. Although I don't think this product is particularly expensive, I would love it if they provided more cord protector length for the current price, especially since you can find other cord protectors out there (granted they tend to be unscented).Great product overall though!

OMG it stinks.
I got this to protect the low voltage electric cord for my cats’ water fountain. The adorable little monsters already chewed through one cord. The tubing is nice and thick and it closes up tightly, so even if the taste doesn’t deter them, physically it should protect the cord. Right out of the package the smell was almost overpowering I tell you what. I suggest you take it out of the package and just put it outside for a day or two before using it indoors. Ironically when I put the tubing over the cord my cats were intrigued but didn’t seem the least bit repelled. Easy to apply and easy to cut with scissors. I put it on straight out of package and the smell didn’t seem to deter anyone from drinking water or eating from the dish near by. The smell is … at first I thought chemically liquid plant fertilizer, but decided it’s more like permanent wave stuff my sister used so many years ago. The smell washed off my hands with just soap and water. It’s been a couple days and I don’t hardly smell it anymore. Didn’t do a taste test.

Read about several problems before purchase.
This stuff needs to come with warnings. First it is not easy to work with. Using it with all 6' puts a good bit of strain on the hands, to the point of pain and must stop. The worst is when cutting it to the length needed, I would recommend cutting to size first, then putting cable inside it. I did not do this and had it almost all covering my computer power cable and, although not sure why, I thought I was cutting below the computer cable but I was not. I ended up cutting the computer cable along with this plastic despite being careful. This will be the 2nd replacement cable for this same computer and I would have done better elevating the cable out of puppy's reach or even wrapping it in duct tape or anything because I would not have cut the cable. This has been an expensive product to buy and then to use now that I must buy another expensive power cable. And, no, I don't have eye trouble at all. The 3rd problem is the stench from the cable tube. I sniffed it when I first unwrapped it and didn't smell too bad. But after working with it, the room stinks. It took me several hours to realize it was this stuff making the entire room really stink. If it goes away quickly, then what was the point of using it on the product at all? If it doesn't fade away, then I'm going to need to replace it with something that does not stink.
