Melitta #1 Cone Coffee Filters, Unbleached Natural Brown, 40 Count (Pack of 12) 480 Total Filters Count - Packaging May Vary

These filters are awesome! 5 Stars!! I have been using them for a few decades now, and currently get them from Amazon through Subscribe and Save and have for several years. Again, the filters work great and I have never had a problem with the filters. However, on my last Subscribe and Save order, I only received 10 boxes of 40 inside the normal Melitta carton, not 12! I did not open the carton until after the 30 day return window, so Amazon will not deal with it, or at least I could not find a way to contact them directly. Again, this was NOT a Melitta problem. Amazon sent the order through FBA or Fulfilled by Amazon, but wherever they got the filters from, the carton did have a label from the FBA supplier that indicated there was 2 sets of 5 boxes - even though they were repacked into the original carton that says there were 12 boxes. I tried to post this review in the last few days, but Amazon rejected it because it was not allowed by "community standards" without giving any reason why the review was rejected. To Amazon, if you are going to reject this review, please tell me why! I am only trying to give anybody that orders these from Amazon, especially through Subscribe and Save with a limit of only wanting them when sold by Amazon (not third party), to simply check the carton when they get them. My original review did include images to show what I was talking about, including the label from the FBA supplier. Since it identified the supplier in the image, I am assuming that is why the review was rejected. If THIS review has something Amazon does not approve of, please let me know WHY it is being rejected. If you accept this review, you can remove this last paragraph, or if I can edit it after it is published, I will remove this last paragraph myself.

Ok- just for clarity- when you order ONE of these- you will get twelve packs of coffee filters. Each pack has 40 filters. Total number of filters= 12 packs * 40 filters/pack = 480 filters. This was my expectation (title seems fairly clear to me) and that's what I received. I use these in conjunction with my one-cup coffee maker and they work great: [...] You could use generic Melitta style #4 filters (far cheaper, available from the grocery store) and cut them down to work with the type of coffee maker, since the one-cup coffee makers have smaller baskets, and the disposable filters prevent chronic fouling and buildup. However, this requires one to REMEMBER to buy them on trips to the store (and I'd just keep forgetting to do so). I rationalized that the expense was worth it because 1) it will take me a long time to go through the case, given my 1/day use, 2) it was worth it to me to always have them on hand and 3) some days I just didn't want to hassle with the cutdown (but that's a very minor issue since you can easily cut down a week's worth of filters at once). Additionally: shipping for the case is free with Super Saver Shipping -& I can always find something else to buy on Amazon to make a $[...] purchase(use Amazon Filler Item Finder to do so! [...]).

I use these for a Hamilton Beach 12 cup coffee maker that has a single brew section. I find its best to wet the permanent mesh filter before inserting the Melitta paper filter to get it sit properly.

Does the job

I bought these 'cause an old Brew 'n Go permanent filter was shot, and was tired of my wife tearing up paper towels and stuffing them in. It was too messy for the OCD side of me, and besides it was chemical treated, yada yada. Couldn't buy a single pack when 12 cost what three or four do - the Scot in me said no bloody way! Well, 14 months later, there's still three packs left and we don't shred paper towels any more. Replaced the old Brew 'n Go with a DCM18S after a month, so I've got a new travel mug. Liked the old one a little better, but the filters fit equally well. We tend to use each one twice every morning, and don't usually have a problem with grounds escaping over the edge. YMMV. It may or may not help I fold each at the two seams so they fit in snuggly. Fine grind, #5 Seattle's Best. Cheaper than the Tassimo or Keurig, that's for sure...

I wanted an efficient, single cup brew and this is it. You want to be aware that this is not a 2 cup/little bigger or smaller idea. It is a single serving - A very small SINGLE CUP filter. You save on coffee and get that good solid cup (four pours of water). Believe me, it takes some getting used to but if you can have some discipline it works out.

There are only 2 classes of coffee makers on the market: Those that make 8-12 cups and those that make a single cup. The #1 filters are for machines that make a single cup. These filters are becoming hard to find due to the recent popularity of K-cup machines and I'm pleased that Amazon has them available (and Prime eligible, no less). I have resisted getting a K-cup machine due their size (we don't have a lot of kitchen counter space) and the high cost/cup (~$0.55-0.62 vs. ~$0.09 for manually loaded coffee + filter). IOW, I can have a large coffee every day for 6-7 days for cost of a single cup made with a K-cup machine. Per day, that's not much, but over a year, it amounts to ±$180 less than I would spend with a K-cup machine. In addition, I find that the filters remove much of the inherent bitterness in some coffees -- something you can't do with a K-cup machine.

I've been using "Melitta Cone Coffee Filters, Natural Brown, No. 1" for years with my Black & Decker DCM18S Brew 'n Go Personal Coffeemaker with Travel Mug , but I can no longer find them at any of my local stores. Luckily I found them by the case at Amazon for much less than what I was paying for them at the store. I now have enough filters to last me at least 2 years. These filters fit my 1 cup Black and Decker coffee maker perfectly, and do a much better job filtering the coffee than the permanent filter that comes with it. Another supposed benefit is that paper coffee filters trap oily substances in coffee called "diterpenes", which are said to raise your cholesterol levels, and are not filtered out if you use the permanent mesh filter. I highly recommend using the "Melitta Cone Coffee Filters, Natural Brown, No. 1".
