You will need to select the correct leg and shim to give a plus and minus reading of target measurement. You will also need a setting device (Micrometre) with an accuracy down to your desired resolution. I found my Vernier was not good enough. NB. the fact a device has 100ths of a mm as a readout doesn't mean it is an accurate measurement, my Vernier was a 10th of a mm out. So the accuracy of the bore gauge is only as good as the device you set it with. Once set it seemed repeatable. Remember the setting will change with temperature.

For an inexpensive transfer gauge it is good and measures bores with sufficient accuracy for, for example, engine cylinder boring. Has the advantage of referring tothe same micrometer as you will use to measure the diameter of what goes in the bore, eg the cylinder. The shims are a bit fussy, but you get used to it.

Product came with an inspection certificate, but it had clearly not been inspected. The gauge mechanism did not work, was assembled too tightly, would not return on its spring, and would not measure anything. I choose this bore gauge as it was more expensive than the cheep options, and was from a known brand. Based on my experience, Draper is charging more because of their brand, but their quality that is no better than pathetic.

perfect for the job

The first time I received the Bore gauge set one of the measuring bars was missing but the rest of the kit looked Ok'ish, apart from there being no instructions how to use it whatsoever. A replacement gauge set was sent but this one had another measuring bar missing, so back it has gone. Don't know how accurate it would be as the dial gauge was a pretty cheap looking item. I guess with measuring equipment you really should buy the best you can afford.
