The New Oxford Dictionary for Writers and Editors is the essential A to Z guide for everyone who works with words. Drawing on the expertise of the Oxford Languages department, it provides authoritative advice on those words and names which raise questions time after time because of spelling, capitalization, hyphenation, and cultural or historical context. As well as lexical terms, there are many proper names included: from place names and personal names to names of institutions, literary references, and books of the Bible. Entries give full coverage of recommended spellings, variant forms, confusable words, hyphenation, capitalization, foreign and specialist terms, proper names, and abbreviations. It is an essential tool for writers, editors, publishers, journalists, and web editors, and together with New Hart's Rules and the New Oxford Spelling Dictionary forms the complete editorial reference set. Review: Not Exhaustive, but still a powerful tool in your tool-box - A writer's tool-box needs many different tools in it to cover every eventuality. This little book has quickly become a go-to resource that I would not be without while I write and edit my work. Frequently I find myself supplementing it with other resources, but that is alright. This little book has managed to answer many questions for me. Used sensibly and alongside other resources such as a decent dictionary it is valuable addition to my resuorces that I would not be without. I highly recommend it. Review: ... be rather bulky to carry around but I was pleased when it arrived (very quick delivery) as it is ... - I was a bit concerned as this was only available in hardback and I thought it may be rather bulky to carry around but I was pleased when it arrived (very quick delivery) as it is small enough for the handbag. At a glance it looks very much like a bible or prayer book (size). the contents are terrific, everything a writer needs, when sat writing for several hours even the simplest of words can, suddenly, become totally foreign to the brain. This book sorts it out without a quibble. My only gripe is that it is rather expensive for what it is.

Top of the pile...
I have a copy of this, Fowler's, an OED shorter [two volume] dictionary and a Collins thesaurus, a W&A yearbook and a W&A Guide To Getting Published, and a few others on my desk. This is quite literally at the top of my pile. Not only because it is the smallest, but it is the most used. Would my work still be published or be publishable without it? Yes, I doubt it makes any real difference, but it makes a very great difference to how I see my work before I submit it to editors.

It does what is says on the cover
This is a product that does exactly what it says on the cover and as a writer and editor (despite being so for five decades ) I wouldn't be without it and, as ever, delivered very promptly.

good tool
the book is smaller than I thought it was going to be, but it is a great resource to use in addition with my regular dictionary for all those words and phrases that the spell checker tells you is wrong, when you actually know that they are right. very good book, well worth getting
