Product Description This is a recording of the Indian drone instrument known as tanpura (a.k.a. tambura). It is a convenient and cost effective alternative to both the actual instrument as well as the electronic tanpura / shruti box. It is used for musical performance, practice, or as a background for meditation. Easy licensing is available so that this can be used in your own recordings. All 12 keys are available, this particular one is in the key of āEā. About the Artist Chandra and David Courtney are well known in the field of Indian music. They have an international reputation as both performers and educators. For more information, please check out: http://www.chandrakantha.com

consumer-grade optical media
As other reviews have pointed out, the audio quality is nice. However, if I'm not mistaken, it is stored on CD-R or CD+R. This media is rated for three to five years (sorry, I don't have a source). Personally, I like the glorian recordings better, available on bandcamp.com, because this recording has a high plucked note that is distinct from the drone and I found it distracting.

useful practice item
This CD contains 2 30 minute drones based on E, and is a great practice/improv tool. Just put it on and go! If you need multiple drone tonics, you might look into getting the Raagini Digital Sitar, but if you're just starting out or know you will be limited to a small number of keys, this is a good option.
