Nice historical drama but...
A parallel plot of non-historical characters is missing where to develop a story that would keep us in tension, because this series fails to excite due to excessive historical rigor.VERSALLES is really better.

Wonderful series about the intrigues at Versailles !
The recent BBC TV series was a pleasure to watch, the main characters engaging ... didn't take itself too seriously, but was all the better for that ! I enjoyed it

Compelling costume drama
This three disc set is a lavish production with stunning period costume and a backdrop of Versailles and Le Petit Trianon. It follows the story of the very young Austrian Archduchesse, Marie Antoinette, who has been betrothed as a child bride to Louis of France. This is a political arrangement intended to strengthen the Hapsburg House and she is duly despatched alone to take up life in a new foreign court. Louis is only interested in hunting and clocks and has no idea how to consummate a marriage. This goes on for years and in the meantime other groups are eyeing their chances at the French throne. It’s a complex tale of political intrigue but it’s also a fascinating exploration of the life and time of the central characters. There’s much plotting and double dealing, affairs of the heart and of state and set against a backdrop of a rich and lavish court whilst the French people are struggling to survive. Whilst much of the story is filled with frivolity, the set gives a taste of life in pre Revolution France. It’s lively and there’s more than an essence of truth in most of the events depicted. I’ve enjoyed this and was sorry when it ended. It’s a set I’ll watch again.

Fantastic series.
There have been countless big and small screen adaptations of the Marie Antoinette story, but this lavish new BBC production is arguably the finest to date.Emilia Schule is excellent as the feisty and rebellious, but very likeable 'Antoinette' and is ably supported by an excellent cast, all in flawless period costume and make-up. The stunning location shooting helps to create a very believable 16th century France as we witness the trials and tribulations of the young Austrian Archduchess who travels to Versailles to marry the King's grandson and produce an heir.A seamless mix of drama, intrigue and humour with a healthy dose of raunchiness, 'Marie Antoinette' is a visually impressive and hugely entertaining series that is highly recommended to all fans of quality period dramas, who are not too offended by strong language and sex/nudity.

Filmed on location. Talentless script
Filmed in majestic Versailles. Some fine young actors. But let down by a cheap paperback dame romance story it is based on…

Life of Marie Antoinette
Not really very informative of her life. High in sexual content.

"Let set this palace on fire"
Filmé a Versailles et dans des décors luxueux.L'or et les cristaux se mélange au destin d'une reine à la fin tragique.

First class drama series.
First class period drama deserving of appearing on Masterpiece. Exceptional, well done visually as well as informative of a period in French history that is not widely known. Stand-out performances by the principles and I look forward to Season 2.
