I bought this book to back up research I am doing on The Underground Railroad. It is both heartbreaking and inspiring - true accounts of the conditions and bravery of the people involved.

Social study
Accounts of the various slaves and how they escaped their slavery. It's way too long and too repetitive. It's more of a review of a social worker's case-book or the basis for a doctoral thesis than a general read.

A good historical reminder
It reveals the dark side of american history following the emancipation of slavery. Negros where treated as commodities, the arrogance of the owners was breath taking. A good historical reminder.o

Not what itβs cracked up to be
Not very well written. Use of imaginary underground railway undermines truth of story. Ending abrupt and unsatisfactory.

Very good literature with some difficult language
A very convincing book which gives a clear image of what life was like for a slave on the run. My only criticism is that some of the sentences were difficult to understand, partly because of vocabulary (What, for instance is a 'shucking bee?) and partly because of syntax. I can't decide whether these sentences are deliberately 'antiqued' for effect or, perhaps they make sense to american ridership. Either way footnotes would have been helpful. On the whole I would strongly recommend this book.
