Review Part I (what I thought I saw...)Well made (and acted) film by Francois Ozon. As Isabelle (Marine Vacht) demonstrated throughout the film, she (seemingly) didn't get any enjoyment from her first encounter. Something in her just clicked, as if to say, "If I'm going to put myself through this, I might as well get paid for it." It's strange how (mostly) these films involved people from well-to-do families. Her home situation was rather normal. Loving mom, decent step-dad and her younger brother (who she obviously was close to - despite the age gap). Ultimately, I viewed her as an old soul who didn't know what she truly wanted - and what gap she was trying to fill with her...part type career. Some reviewers noted that there was no real resolution on how Isabelle was going to end up. My view: She's Seventeen - Don't expect any...Review - Part II (what I finally saw...)First, let me admit that I've had several viewings of this excellent movie under my belt. That said, it just goes to show you how much one can miss. The hints/clues and symbolism of what Isabelle is all about are there in front of you - you really have to pay attention from the very beginning. Ultimately, for Isabelle - it's about being in control - literally - on top. She's seeking, always seeking something that she hadn't experienced in her first intimate encounter - as she had NO CONTROL (though she was a willing participant) during the event. From then on, Isabelle was the pleasure giver (and, even more interesting that she made a...BUSINESS out of it)! That being said, you may require several views...to get it!Most recommend! Five stars!

The central character of this film is no heroine. In her mind, she does see her adventures into sex for sale as heroic. At its simplest this is a film of prostitution. It presents several quandaries and steadfastly refuses to resolve any. It brings a clinical laboratory view to cinema presenting beings in clothing attempting to be civilized within set constraints one of which harlotry is forbidden. The tableau is empirical eliminating all of the stereotypical routes such as a bad home, child sexual abuse. We are voyeurs mainly and hardly participants. There is no moral path or redemption sought. As much as a viewer tries to resist its pale presentation of a teenager becoming a professional at sex, it draws them in further by pretending to give an answer to her behavior. Her family and background offer few if any clues. The anthropological sub-theme itself is the moral content. Should this be accepted adolescent behavior? A film has no moral or propagandistic authority to provide an answer. It gives a nonchalant actualization of a modern family but as the viewer you become the scientist. The film allows to mentally experiment with the parental and sibling parts and of course as it would be her scholastic lack of engagement. This could be presented as a narrative voice over with some deep voiced actor giving a video thesis; very boring and not artistic cinema. The root causes for her endeavor are not in our province in this age. So a movie exploring the symptoms leading to the one thing humans have moralized, demonized and worshipped: promiscuous intimate relationships for pay. We do get a peep of the men paying but the solid protagonist is this female teenager. A fun film but truly disparaging especially if you see sexual exploitation as part and parcel of prostitution.

Life, being that it is not fair, offers each of us a unique set of circumstances. The measure of joy and pain experienced by each of us in our own lives can not be replicated or understood by anyone else. Other's may appreciate, or empathize, or even denigrate but only minimally so, for they are consumed and blinded by their own motivations as well. Is it really possible to know what another person knows? Isabelle would seem to be one of the lucky ones. Life, being ever so fickle, gives her opportunities that are not afforded to a great many. She has youth, beauty, potential. Her physical traits allow for options and possibilities. People want her to respond. Despite these advantages, she is an emotional automaton. She efforts to understand what others understand, that life is full and joyous and wonderful and tragic. She tries to sample it, gain control over it, find whatever it is that she thinks everyone else readily comprehends. What is sexual freedom? What is love? What is it to gain independence over one's own life? I enjoyed the narrative and her mysterious detachment, for on the surface they appear inconsistent with what everyone else would expect of her. Her innerworkings were just that - hers. She allowed strangers to possess her physically, but that was as far as she was willing to go. She never gave herself up, to anyone. Some people are just melancholy, and no matter how much they strive to escape it, they must eventually resign themselves to the truth. Life, it would seem, really isn't fair.

warning! this disk will most likely not play on your all region players at home. i have never encountered a disc that would not play because of format issues on my players until now. returns to this outfit are only worth 50% of original purchase price because they have been opened. do not order anything from these people unless you are willing to put up with this. i am mad!

I felt there was a lack of character development, as one really never understands why she did what she did. But then, why did the death have such a strong impact on her, when she lead a life of a lie? Or did she feel responsible. The jacket on the DVD brings up the question as to what Isabelle hopes to gain by offering up her body to strangers, as if the director answers that. But it is never answered. However, the ending allowed me to give it three stars.

It is a great movie and my French is good enough to watch and enjoy French movies. Still looking for 2 in particular.

Wieder ein "François Ozon" (den Film aus dem Jahr 2013 habe ich mehrmals gesehen), wieder sein Kameraman Pascal Marti, der ihn, so scheint es, ABSOLUT versteht.Die Bilder am Beginn zeigen ein Mädchen, das sich am Strand sonnt. Sie hat den Oberteil des Bikinis ausgezogen, als sie hört, dass jemand kommt, zieht sie sich an. Was sie nicht weiß, ein Mann (oder Frau) hat sie mit dem Fernglas länger beobachtet.Dann sehen wir die Familie, die Mutter Sylvie (Géraldine Pailhas), den jüngeren Bruder Victor (Fantin Ravat) und den Stiefvater Patrick (Frédéric Pierrot).Das junge Mädchen, Isabelle (Marine Vacth) feiert gerade ihren 17.Geburtstag.Sie hat keinen Freund, ist aber neugierig und möchte endlich wissen, wie es ist. Ein junger deutscher Urlauber Felix (Lucas Prisor) gefällt ihr, umgekehrt auch. An einem Abend passiert es. Für Isabelle war es anscheinend, nein, sicher, keine gute Erfahrung. Sie will Felix auch nicht mehr sehen, sie ist nicht verliebt, das war eine einmalige "Sache"...Zurück in Paris geht sie in die Schule, hat einige Freundinnen, sonst geht sie nicht auf Partys, zeigt keine Zeichen der Verliebtheit. Die Mutter wundert sich, fragt sie manchmal, doch Isabelle antwortet nur kurz.Was keiner weiß, sie lebt ein Doppelleben.Am Nachmittagen trifft sie sich in Hotels mit Männern. Ihr Preis - 300€. Die meisten Männer sind älter, sogar älter als ihr Stiefvater. Sie erzählt allen, dass sie Lea heißt, 20 Jahre jung ist, eine Studentin, die ihr Geld fürs Studium(?) auf diese Weise verdient...Georges (Johan Leysen), ein Mann über 60 Jahre wird ihr Kunde. Neben anderen. Einige trifft sie in besseren Hotels, andere..., einer will ihr keine 300 zahlen, sie sei dies nicht wert gewesen.Jetzt lässt sie Isabelle/Lea vorher bezahlen.Zuhause versteckt sie das Geld, sie gibt es nicht aus. Wenn sie sich mit den Männern trifft, trägt sie ein Kostüm, die graue Seidenbluse hat sie sich von ihrer Mutter "geliehen" und streitet vehement ab, als sie die Bluse sucht.Sie lebt sonst eher still, spricht zwar mit ihrem Bruder, der Mutter und dem Stiefvater erzählt sie nur alltägliche Sachen.Dann geschieht es, beim Geschlechtsverkehr mit Georges...wird ihm schlecht, er stirbt. Isabelle versucht halbherzig eine Beatmung und Hermasagge, doch, es hilft nicht. Sie flüchtet aus dem Hotel....Die Polizei findet sie, es gibt Bewachungskameras. Sie sprechen zuerst mit der Mutter....dann mit Isabelle. Sie gibt alles zu, sagt auch, dass sie nach Georges' Tod keine Bekannschaften mehr hatte.Sie wird zum Psychiater geschickt. Ob es hilft?Sie trifft sich mit einem Jungen, Alex (Laurent Delbecque), der in ihrem Alter ist. Und will die Beziehung beenden, sie liebt ihn nicht."Was habe ich falsch gemacht?", fragt sich ihre Mutter.Der Therapeut, Serge Hefez, der sich selbst spielt, versucht zu erklären, dass die Grenzen, die die Jugendliche testen, manchmal sehr "schlimm" sind."Hast du eine Affäre mit dem Ehemann deiner besten Freundin?", fragt Isabelle ihre Mutter, was möglich ist.Nach Monaten, es ist Frühling, sieht Isabelle in ihrem Handy mit neuer SIM-Karte die Nachrichten. Sie geht ins Hotel, in dem sie mit Georges war. Da wartet sie, es kommt eine ältere Frau, Alice (Charlotte Rampling). Sie ist/war mit Georges verheiratet, will die junge "Geliebte" sehen.Sie spricht über ihre Erinnerungen an Georges, über ihre geheimen Wünsche sich mit den Männern zu treffen und sich dafür bezahlen lassen. Sie hatte damals in jungen Jahren keinen Mut gehabt.Der Film beginnt im Sommer, geht über den Herbst in den Winter, dann kommt Frühling. Im Herbst beginnt sich Isabelle zu verkaufen, im Winter stirbt Georges, im Frühling versucht sie...François Ozon erzählt die Geschichte, als wäre er ein Zuschauer.Alles, was geschieht, kommt spontan. Die Gespräche sind eher karg, aber, eine 17-jährige hat meistens keine Lust groß mit der Mutter zu diskutuieren. Meistens ist sie in der Gesellschaft ihrer Freund*innen.So sollte es auch bei Isabelle sein. Zwar mag sie ihren Bruder, aber sonst wirkt sie unbeteiligt, sie gehört nur zufällig zu der Familie, könnte aber auch anderswo leben.Es gibt keine Zeichen, dass Isabelle etwas widerfahren ist, womit sie jetzt nicht klar kommt, keine Anzeichen der häuslichen Gewalt. Im Gegenteil, sie lebt behütet, die Elteren verdienen gut und könnten ihr fast alles ermöglichen, wie die Mutter bei der Polizei betont.Das Geld spielt nur eine Randrolle. Dass sie sich an die Männer verkauft, dass sie sich in Gefahr begibt, ist ihr nicht bewusst. Wenn sie darüber nachdenkt, sprechen wird sie nie darüber.Sie macht einfach weiter. Nein, es ist nicht immer gut, aber, dann muss sie wiedergehen und sich mit einem Fremden treffen.Sie lügt, als sie sich als 20 - jährige ausgibt, doch, die Männer hätten mehr Probleme bekommen.Testet sie wirklich Grenzen? Ist sie einfach nur innerlich leer, hat sie Minderheitsgefühle? Alles wäre möglich...Doch Ozon, der Meister der Geschichte, gibt uns keine Antwort.Und so soll es bleiben.Die Antwort sollen wir finden, jede Lösung (auch Teile davon) helfen. Der Film birgt neue une neue Elemente, die beim zweiten oder dritten Mal zu sehen/hören sind.Die Darsteller*innen, perfekt! Marine Vacth, ein Naturtalent, Géraldine Pailhas als entsetzte Mutter (sonst bekannt als Doña Anna - Don Juan DeMarco, 1995...) sist die richtige für die komplexe Rolle.Was kann DIE Rampling schon falsch machen?Ein Genuss, zwar nicht leicht, doch, wir bekommen mehr als wir erwarten.

Non è un film sulla prostituzione minorile, secondo impropria definizione datane, ma un film che racconta di quella misteriosa, problematica stagione di crescita e di formazione della vita che è l'adolescenza. Essa è sviluppata tramite una storia di prostituzione minorile che non costituisce però il tema centrale della pellicola ma piuttosto lo strumento utilizzato dal regista per descrivere in maniera del tutto asettica, senza indulgere in facili moralismi e senza compiacimento alcuno, la spiazzante deriva della giovane protagonista. Quest'ultima, che non riesce a costruire un soddisfacente rapporto di coppia con un coetaneo, che non riesce a incalanare il suo percorso di crescita nella giusta direzione, appare freddamente enigmatica, profondamente arida, incapace di amare ma sarà realmente così? Ozon si diverte a giocare con lo spettatore infarcendo la storia di elementi che possano indurre una riflessione (quell'inaspettata lacrima che solca il viso della protagonista ed ancor più il dolcissimo, delicato finale) nel rispetto dell'opinione di ciascuno, senza necessariamente offrire una sua predominante lettura. Mai prima d'ora il mondo dell'adolescenza era stato trattato con tale efficacia, con tale cruda dirompenza, con la forza che traspare da ogni fotogramma e che la fascinosa Marine Vacht rende con profonda e concentrata intensità. Interessanti le interviste raccolte negli extra.

A very interesting film about the daughter of a woman who herself cheats on her second husband. The 17 year old very beautiful student begins her experimentation with sex, behind her parents back and discovers that she can get paid for it by much older men. She just likes the sex or thinking about what happens after the fact, she is not looking for a steady lover. She continues until one day her much older clients dies while having sex, and the police contact her parents. The film is done with much realism and it is sensual, but not too graphic, a very European film where the sexuality is more open and accepted. Very nicely done.
