The action of this sequel occurs in multiple locations: war-ravaged Earth, an orbital station, and Mars. The background reflects today's problems: nanotechnology, artificial intelligence, and misinformation warfare. The heroine Janlin now has to confront Diona Jordan, defacto ruler of the Mars colony; Diona callously experiments on unwitting subjects (and even her own brother) in hopes of saving her daughter's life. While the novel is complete by itself, reading the first book helps to understand the background.
