Shakespeare Live! From The RSC [DVD]

Even if you are not a Shakespeare fan you will enjoy this, partly because the selections are quite short, and with such a wonderful variety you cannot help but be entertained. I watched this on tv when it was first broadcast, and thought that it was brilliant. Obviously I watched the " To be or not to be" clip on YouTube, but there were many other highlights. In particular I enjoyed the choreography of Othello by David Bintley, the singing of Ian Bostridge, accompanied by Antonio Pappano. The Chinese and African versions of Macbeth were intriguing, showing the worldwide appeal of Shakespeare. However, the character of Malvolio was not quite up to the standard of Desmond Barritt. I could understand why Sir Ian McKellan is so revered. What a voice! Also the wonderful Judi Dench added her own superb acting ability to the proceedings.The whole show was very well organised, and the two presenters linked all the acts very well. I wish that there was a part two, with perhaps the likes of Kenneth Branagh or Derek Jacobi. A truly wonderful homage to the Bard.

I am not the most technological person, so I did not realize that this would not play on anything I have since I live in a different region.How I have seen this performance and totally love the production.

Great dvd celebrating Shakespeare over the years at Stratford upon Avon.

The BBC could have gotten away with just famous actors doing famous scenes. But luckyly they chose to do a program that also incorperated balllet, rap, Duke Ellington, West Side story and Kiss me Kate. A very funny scene with various actors and their interpretaion of To be or not to be.

In essence a variety show based on Shakespeare's work and other people's developments of his themes. Shakespeare to Duke Ellington, tragedy and comedy - all presented at the highest standard.
