Soutine`s Portraits.
Published to accompany the current exhibition at The Courtauld Gallery (running till January 2018) this paperback is a welcome addition to the relatively few available volumes on Soutine`s work. The exhibition brings together for the first time as many of Soutine`s portraits of hotel staff and kitchen workers the organisers were able to assemble. There are 21 paintings in the show and each is reproduced as a full-size colour plate (allowing for the format, either half or full-length) with an accompanying, extensive description. The paintings are supplemented by several full-page details and some 47 supporting illustrations of related paintings, comparative works, photographs and other useful references, many of which are in colour. There are three interesting essays considering the place of these works in Soutine`s oeuvre, their context within “School Of Paris” painting and how they relate to the commercial world of hotels in the period in which they were painted.A very useful and quite visually satisfying book dealing with a particular facet of this remarkable painter's work, well worth adding to your art library.

Thanks
A present for my partner whose favourite artist is Soutine. He was too ill to go to the exhibition so hopefully this will be a good substitute.
