Excellent
I remember this from when it was first shown on TV. Watching it again I wasn't disappointed. I enjoy science fiction but get fed up with modern films with well known American actors (Bruce Willis, Tom Cruise, etc.) Nice to watch something with minimal sex and violence.

Outstanding off-beat comedy romance.
The Flipside of Dominick Hide was made for BBC television in 1980. It caused a minor sensation when first shown, and was so successful that a sequel was commissioned. It very loosely falls into the genre of Science Fiction as it concerns the adventures and experiences of our hero Dominick (Colin Firth) as he travels in time back to London in the 1980's. However, the time travel thing is a useful device to generate a number of funny, sometimes hilarious, misunderstandings. It is also a romance, Dominick managing to become his own great-great- grandfather along the way (I think that's right). You will see.It is full of gentle charm. Interesting characters. And the flying saucer...! It was wonderful to see this play again after all these years (for some obscure reason it hasn't been repeated); it really is a one-off. The follow-up 'Another Flip for Dominick', whilst inevitably not quite as striking as the original, is nevertheless very amusing too and nicely brings the tale to a happy end.To have both these excellent plays on one DVD at this price is amazing; there is also an excellent booklet included. Picture and sound quality are fine for their age.Very highly recommended.

Scuse? Dated but still brilliant
I'm so pleased these two BBC plays were put onto DVD. Ever since seeing them originally in the early 80s I've used the phrase "Scuse". I remember the flying saucer type hat and the holograms. I thoroughly enjoyed watching these two back to back. Acting and dialogue is a bit stilted but I still loved the memory trip. Great stuff.

80s brilliance
Although now looking through the lense of time, this piece of "future sf" tells us more about 80s attitudes to sexism and future world politics, this is a wee gem.Dominic's sexism and that of the future society may not have been obvious to an 80s audience - and an audience still to really feel the impact of Thatcherism could not invisage a future that became dystopian rather than the future of patriarchal socialism predicted by the playwrite (although the play does not mention the anti-industrialist turmoil already smashing Britain).I recommend this for it's superb plot, and for the anachronisms both in the future and the past. (The "future's" 3D tv is much better than the ones we have at the moment - though their taste for Beatles music played by chamber quartet's are a bit rubbish!).An updated script and re-imagining would be a fantastic BBC idea! :D

Has stood the time
I mentioned this 80's BBC Drama out of the blue and someone told me I could get two DVDs, that is The Flipside of Dominick Hide and Another Flip for Dominic plus a booklet for an amazingly low price. I thought it would appear to be hopelessly old fashioned but to my delight it has withstood the test of time. If you like gentle sci fi and a wonderful time paradox with humour then this is for you. I never realised that a young Harry from Spooks played the lead role and he does it very well. The future is not brutal as in many sci fi futures but gentle and rather bland where no-one takes any risks and so when Dominick enters the 1980's he has to deal with sights and sounds and emotions that are entirely new to him. It is also a rather quirky love story and I would thoroughly recommend it.

like many others i saw this back in the 80s and loved it then, a quirky love story with time travel thrown in and some really quite funny bits when dominick tries to relate to the world he had landed in compared to his future world, a lovely twist in the story...................... ah won`t say what in case you have`nt seen it yet, just in case this has passed you by please give it a watch i am looking forward to this dropping onto our mat it will be a delight to see again, the second part i enjoyed as much as the first i just wish the bbc had made a third part to round off the story i think it deserved it as there were to me unanswered questions a big well done to the bbc for releasing this little seen gem from the archives

An absolute gem
Bought on a whim - on the strength of the reviews here and a vague memory of its intriguing title - this turns out to be one of the best buys I've made in a long time. The original play is superbly written, beautifully acted, compelling and extremely moving. Its sequel, Another Flip, is scarcely less good - perhaps I'd say it's only excellent rather than truly superb, but for a sequel that's a big achievement. Together they bring the story to a satisfying and bittersweet conclusion. I suspect that the limited special effects (rather good for 1980, but still... well, 1980 standard) are a strength rather than a weakness, as all the focus is on character, story and dialogue, where the piece really shines. Often funny, very inventive, constantly interesting and ultimately very emotional, this is an absolute gem.

The Best "Science Fiction" Movies
This movie falls well within my category of "Science Fiction". I normally don't like Science Fiction, as I have always considered that the Writers/Producers take themselves much too seriously - they can back their heroes into a corner and then simply invent a method by which they can escape!! The Flip Side doesn't need any of those additions, as it certainly doesn't take itself that seriously. The movie is funny, poignant and contains one of the best Romantic Entanglements you are ever likely to see. If you just want to lie back and enjoy a simple movie that will make you laugh and arouse most of your other senses, then don't miss "The Flip Side of Dominic Hyde" and "Another Flip For Dominic".
