BRILLIANT ACTING
Henry Fonda plays Norman Thayer, and Katherine Hepburn plays his wife Ethel. They are a retired couple, advancing in years who have a lakeside summer cottage, which they have just arrived at. Shortly after, their daughter Chelsea, played by Jane Fonda, arrives with her boyfriend, and his teenage son. They arrange to leave the teenager there while they go to Europe. At first the age gap gets in the way, but before long, a bond develops between Norman and the teenager. This is a poignant film with brilliant acting from everyone although it will only appeal to a certain age group. There is no action, instead you get a brilliant story with superb acting. This film is about life, and the problems that come with it. This is the only film that Jane Fonda and Henry Fonda starred in together.Picture Quality is good, with natural colours. This dvd transfer is in the original aspect ratio of 1.85:1 and the sound is in the original mono.

brilliant acting in delightful story
I recently saw an very good amateur version of this play and was so touched by the story I had to buy the original DVD (also a copy for the friend who took me to the play). In spite of knowing the story I was still deeply touched by the relationships portrayed and yet again ended up in tears (I do not normally cry at films). The fear and confusion as well as more tender moments are seen in the elderly couple and are so beautifully portrayed by the clever scripting and brilliant actors. I loved the setting of the story and some very picturesque scenery. The humour, nostalgia, confusion and stubbornness are all intermingled so it never becomes too heavy. As someone who does not normally enjoy romantic or overly deep stories in films I still found this a very touching yet enjoyable film to watch.

Slow paced, touching, a couple's autumn years.
I watched this when I was in my teens and enjoyed it very much. It's not a bad film, slow moving, the performance by the child character Doug McKeon almost surpassed the old school actors. After watching again, recently, I found Jane, distracted from the story for me.Worth a watch, easy going.

Father/Daughter relationship drama....
No car chases, no explosions, an example of where relationships fail, yet can be restored. Beautiful cinematography, script, music and players. I'm pushing 60 yrs old now.... yet this film moved me as a 20 ish yr old...enjoy the humour and the pathos equally!
