Must have if a dog owner
Great book to have on hand. We travel a lot and this book travels with us. Many times I turn the pages in order to get a better idea on what my fur baby is going through. As I think back my guys always seem to get sick when the doctor is out. Grab the book, get a idea of what is wrong and have a idea of what to do or if we should be looking for a clinic. Calms my nerves until we can find a professional.

Become an educated Dog Guardian/Companion
The format with various specific categories to present vital information is excellent. The category of the various breeds' health proclivities is a boon of information. I would recommend this to any responsible dog guardian for a pertinent education.

It's OK but not a useful tool for treatments.
The book's title is a bit misleading. This book is not intended for a veterinarians use, indeed, it is intended for the lay person's use. Almost every page suggests that you "see a veterinarian". It is pretty basic and offers little in the way of remedies to any of the illnesses and symptoms discussed. That said, it is somewhat useful in understanding and perhaps pointing in the right direction, animal symptoms. I was looking for a book that offered more material on treatments.

This is my go-to guide for when my dog gets sick. I even buy copies for friends.

Don't Waste Your Hard Earned Money
For the animal lover that wishes to be paranoid over every time your pet sneezes, coughs, limps and has an ache, then this book is for you. This book offers very little at home intervention practices for our four legged companions. In other words, you must visit the local vet every time there is a minor problem. It seems this advice is going to make the vet a little richer as you get a little poorer. Now I will admit that the first few pages (common sense items really) are fairly instructive, but the remainder of the book is quite "choppy" and hard to follow sometimes. In an emergency it could be difficult to find your way around in the book to locate exactly what action to take. But, then again it should be easy according to the authors, just take your pet to the vet!! There are many other books out there that offer many more things the owner can try (not life threatening emergencies) before making the decision to visit the vet. For instance, other books actually take more time in explaining how to make splints and how better to utilize human medication for fevers, colds, kennel cough, sprains, arthritis, bite wounds, diarrhea(etc). Personally, I have worked as a vet technician for many years and I can assure you that much more intervention practices can be done at home that this book would have you to believe. Unfortunately, don't take too seriously everything in this book and offer the vet the diagnosis of your pet when you walk in the door. For starters, most vets would take your diagnosis to be offensive and this would insult his or hers intelligence right off the bat!! So just play a little dumb if you have to visit the vet while keeping in mind some of information derived from the book that might be the correct diagnosis.

Handy book!
Very helpful to home diagnose your dog and decide if it needs to go to the vet. Also very useful in helping understand illnesses or injuries your vet may have diagnosed.
