From the New York Times bestselling author of The Paleo Approach and The Healing Kitchen comes the most comprehensive resource to date for those seeking a scientifically founded nutritional approach to optimal health. In her signature approachable yet comprehensive style, Sarah Ballantyne, PhD, has laid a complete foundation for understanding the principles of the Paleo template in order to inform and empower people’s day-to-day choices. Combined with an unprecedented collection of practical strategies, tips, and visual guides, plus more than 200 delicious recipes and twenty meal plans for a variety of health goals, this book is a one-stop-shop for nutrition nerds, health nuts, and gourmands alike. The Paleo diet is a nutrient-dense, anti-inflammatory whole-foods diet based on eating a variety of quality vegetables, meats, seafood, fruits, eggs, nuts, seeds, healthy fats, herbs, and spices. It is clinically proven to improve health by providing complete and balanced nutrition while omitting most processed and refined foods and empty calories. Far from being a historical re-enactment, the Paleo framework is derived from thousands of scientific studies that illuminate our understanding of which foods support health and which foods undermine it. Combined with attention to essential lifestyle factors like physical activity, sleep, and stress, the Paleo template is quite simply the most robust approach out there for optimal health, performance, and longevity! With the perfect balance of detailed explanations, accessible summaries of actionable information, and visual guides, Paleo Principles provides everything readers need to achieve their best health. Beyond a set of rules, this book teaches precisely why some foods are better choices than others while providing indispensable resources like food lists, shopping guides, and cooking how-tos. Health comes from more than just the foods on our plates, however, which is why Dr. Ballantyne also incorporates a focus on lifestyle factors known to improve health, including being active, getting enough sleep, managing stress, and connecting with community. People needn’t worry that following a Paleo-style diet will leave them feeling hungry or deprived. Healthy re-creations of family-friendly favorites, from pizza to pancakes, prove that you can regain your health and love every bite! Paleo Principles contains more than 200 nutritious Paleo recipes that are free of gluten, grain, dairy, legumes, and refined sugar—including kitchen basics, breakfasts, soups and salads, main dishes, side dishes, baked goods, and desserts—all labeled for the top eight allergen ingredients as well as other common food sensitivities, like FODMAPs and nightshades, and the Autoimmune Protocol. Adapt the Paleo template to serve your specific needs and health goals by using Paleo Principles’ guides on customizing macronutrient ratios, navigating gray-area foods, troubleshooting chronic illnesses and food sensitivities, transitioning to a Paleo-style diet, understanding your body’s individual response to different foods, and balancing Paleo priorities with competing interests for lifelong success. Combine these resources with twenty meal plans reflecting the most common health objectives, and you have the know-how to personalize your plan to fit your life. Join the millions of people taking back their health by following a Paleo lifestyle. Whether your goal is to lose weight, increase performance, reduce cardiovascular disease risk factors, prevent cancer, mitigate autoimmune disease, reverse diabetes, or simply achieve your best health, Paleo Principles gives you answers and a veritable toolkit to make lasting, positive change toward better health. Review: Much more than a Paleo book - I normally don't write book reviews. However, this book is so well done that I felt compelled to do so. It is SO much more than a simple book on the Paleo diet. In fact, I think the title is misleading in that it may limit the audience this book will benefit. It is a comprehensive book on overall health, nutrition combined with a cookbook that has genuinely real recipes that one will use. I would also say that this book isn't just for people interested in the Paleo diet. The author also isn't afraid to veer away from what current Paleo fad diets promote when the science may disagree. It's simply a well written book for anyone interested in learning which foods are good to eat, which foods to avoid, and why (the science and physiology behind the principles), regardless of what "diet" plan you are following. This book should be the required textbook for medical students on nutrition. It explains the science and biology behind the nutritional principles, but is done is a manner that the average reader can understand and that one that someone with advanced learning will greatly benefit from. The way many doctors practice medicine would change if they understood the info presented in this book. The book addresses specific common illnesses in our culture, many of which stem from our poor eating habits and lifestyle choices, and how to correct them. Its also the most honest nutrition book that I've read. It doesn't pretend to have all the answers and the author acknowledges when and where the science is still being settled on specific issues. The author also acknowledges that every person is unique and that dietary needs varies for individuals. I haven't read any other books by Dr Ballantyne, but am quite impressed with the amount of info she gathered together for this book. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to 1.) improve their eating habits (I avoid the "diet" word, for those are just short-lived changes with short-lived results), 2.) to improve their understanding on how their body functions, and 3.) simply want to feel better. I wish I could have read this book 30 years ago. Review: Significant and important resource about the comprehensive paleo template. - This is the new preeminent text book on Paleo (with an entire book-worth of recipes!), that gives you the science behind the Paleo diet and lifestyle choices to keep you motivated, challenged, and learning more. I was really excited to receive this book. It is extensive, and I have learned so much in beginning to explore its contents. The Book (with a capital B for shear size and amount of information included) begins with a chapter on Nutrient Density. If you have been doing Paleo for any length of time, read and re-read this chapter. In many ways I wish my Paleo journey began with this information as the center, rather than the list of can'ts that originally launched my journey. The Book continues with solid science behind different topics relevant to a Paleo lifestyle, including an exhaustive amount of information about the diet template itself, but also including topics such as stress, sleep, exercise, and how in the heck to do this on a budget (hint to fellow parents: when you feed your kids this way, they actually eat less often... I'm saving $30 bucks a month in granola bars alone). If you are a fellow Paleo believer, you will really benefit from the information in this book to refine and improve your template, with a very solid, scientific "why" skillfully interpreted so non-scientists can understand. If you are brand new to paleo, you will certainly find the reasons and the how-to in the pages of this book. My advice for newbies would be to familiarize yourself with the table of contents, and read the book in the way it will serve you best. Don't be overwhelmed! You will mine this book for years to come. You may be best served starting with Part 6, "Putting Paleo into Practice", and enjoy the remainder of the book as inspiration to keep you going with this major lifestyle re-vamp. Part 6 is full of bullet points and info graphics to get you started quickly and seamlessly with Paleo. This is a significant, and valuable resource for the Paleo community.

Don't be intimidated by its size.... This is a terrific reference book, easy to read, you will love it!
Terrific!! I can't stop read it!! I pull my yellow highlighted as soon as I started to read it. I felt that this book was made just for me! Don't be intimidated by the size of this book, it is an easy read even if you are not a scientist. I've been enjoying a lot of the cross references available in all the chapters and pictures that makes this book easily accessible for everyone!!. You can read one chapter at a time in any order. This is an excellent reference book to come back to it again and again. It has answered many questions that I had and clarify other concepts that I did not understand, like the use of HCl and Digestive Enzymes. Sara has made this book so easy to read that she have a lot of italic recommendation on "Easy Paleo Button", "Healthy Quick-Start" (My favorite so far is eat 8 cups of veggies, 2 for breakfast, 3 for lunch and 3 for dinner). She has also made the science interesting with her "Knowledge Bombos" and "Science Simply" in italic and with cute pictures, that even my 11 year old enjoys it!. Thanks Sarah for sharing your knowledge with us!

Paleo Principles - the guide of all guides for anybody wanting to understand paleo
Dr. Sarah Ballantyne has done it again! Paleo Principles is a labor of scientific love founded on the core values & principles of Paleo. Written in a simplistic scientific manner, Sarah debunks many myths about the Paleo diet, quotes and discusses scientific studies to reinforce the theory and provides clear graphics, tips, recipes & meal plans for those who are ready to take their health into their own hands and eat in a nutrient dense way. Sarah also focuses on the lifestyle factors that we must address to be healthy, those of sleep, mindfulness & daily exercise demonstrating paleo is simply a healthy way to live your life. Since receiving the book I have referred to it over 6 times with clients, bringing clarity from a highly respected source. I highly placing it in your shopping cart today.

LOVE this book and have already felt results healing my leaky gut!
You wanna to find out what this Paleo life style or Auto immune protocol is all about? Well this book has everything about those two subjects and much much more. I'm not kidding when I say this book if informative and written in a way everyone can understand. The author breaks down with great detail the science behind Paleo and gives you great easy recipes and detailed food plans. Even breaks down your grocery list and day to day breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snack plans. The book is really a text book for Paleo, a one stop shop for all Paleo. I have already tried many recipes in this book and love the pancakes and bone broth the best. I also have already felt better since starting eating more. Not every plan is for everyone so take that into account but If you are looking for something to help with you gut or overall inflammation in your body, you should give this book a try.

good book
So far what I have read seems solid, and I really like how the book is written. It is easy to understand, and the information in it seems solid. Then why four stars and not five stars? I don't believe in evolution of man from ape, it goes against there being a creator that made humans unique and specific. I do not believe you can evolve into something which can think and reason, from something that cannot, and only acts on instinct. Besides that section, I like the rest of the book and the information it presents. All the information regarding fats, proteins, etc. is well written. I'd buy it again.

Best nutrition book -- bar none
I'm a HUGE nutrition nerd, have been since I was a child and my hippie mother started teaching me about food and natural health. That being said, I've read an incredible amount of nutrition books, and this one takes the (gluten- and sugar-free) cake. Not only is it a veritable wealth of information in almost textbook form, but it includes great recipes, and one can flip to any section of the book and start reading. I also found the information seemingly objective and open-minded, instead of being caught up in dietary dogma. Kinda wish the front cover photo wasn't so cheesy, but that doesn't really matter haha. Bought a copy for my mom and she loves it too :)

A comprehensive and approachable resource on the Paleo way of life
I highly recommend this book. The paleo diet is compelling but is it really effective? Paleo Principles answers this question by presenting a well researched, readable compilation of the basis for the diet and the benefits derived. The author is well versed in the science necessary to understand the right way to eat. However, I learned paleo is more than just a diet. Paleo Principles covers paleo as a lifestyle. Diet is one dimension of an overall approach including exercise, stress management, sleep cycles and more. Including these elements with diet is a much more effective approach. Filled with facts, information, suggestions and eminently usable, Paleo Principles is a great read.

Very thorough and balanced perspective
I just received a copy of this book and the pictures and information are already enticing, but I have to go to work! The book is bigger than I anticipated. It’s textbook size. I overlook things in the book that don’t line up with my values. These are few. The book is very informative and I’m glad I purchased it. I highly recommend it for people with autoimmune disease or people that want to be in control of their health.
